Local sports roundup: Harrow's Sanders wins duathlon, Stars split, Windsor twins

Harrow?s Lionel Sanders really went the extra distance to win the 2012 Canadian Duathlon championships in Toronto Sunday during the Triathlon Festival Weekend.

With no marshal directing the frontrunner to the turnaround point for the closing five-kilometre run, he went an extra three kilometres before turning back on his own.

?Of the top 15, the majority went past the turnaround,? Sanders said. ?One guy ended up running the full 10k again.?

By the time Sanders was headed back, there was a marshal and a sign indicating the way. The race director recognized the error by adjusting the times of those who went too far, putting Sanders as the overall champ.

It?s the first time Canada has staged a national duathlon championship since 2008. Competitors did a 10-k run, a 40-k bike through downtown Toronto and a five-k run.

The top 10 places in each age group qualified for the 2013 world championships in Spain.

Sanders, who was hoping to post a sub 1:50 time prior to his extended five-k, plans to compete in the Windsor Triathlon in two weeks.

Also during the Festival, five local athletes qualified for the worlds in London.

Liz Campbell in the women?s 60-64 age group of the Olympic distance event finished first with an overall time of two hours, 44:02 minutes.

In the sprint event, Tecumseh?s Andrew Vendrasco finished first in the men?s 30-34 age group (1:07:54) and Leamington?s Pauline Kniaziew was first in the women?s 60-64 age group (1:36:08). Finishing second were Tecumseh?s Bridget Taylor (1:20:21) and Leamington?s Linda Penner (1:39:06).

CFL roundup

Former Essex Ravens receiver Andy Fantuz had eight receptions for 135 yards and one TD to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 39-24 victory over the Montreal Alouettes Saturday in Canadian Football League action.

Former Windsor Lancers running back Daryl Stephenson also added a touchdown on a one-yard run, as the Tiger-Cats earned their second straight victory.

On defence, former Lancers defensive end Matt Bucknor finished with four tackles for the Tiger-Cats.

Alouettes defensive tackle J.P. Bekasiak of Tecumseh had one tackle.

In other CFL news, LaSalle?s Nathan Riva made his debut with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during a 25-22 loss to the Toronto Argos last week.

Riva, who backed up starting running back Chad Simpson, carried the ball twice for five yards.

The Sandwich grad signed a contract with the Blue Bombers earlier this month.

LaSalle?s Luke Willson was named to the pre-season watchlist for the John Mackey Award presented annually to college football?s top tight end.

The multi-sport star has also spent time in extended spring training with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Coach Hall

The bantam hockey team coached by ex-Spit Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers came back from a four-goal deficit but lost in a shootout to a team coached by John Tavares of the New York Islanders at the Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Cup in Mississauga Saturday.

?Amazed with the players in the All-Canadians game,? said former Spitfire Ben Shutron, an intern with Hockey Canada?s recruitment and retention department.

?They possess a ton of skill and hockey sense. The future of hockey is in great hands.?

Windsor?s Ron Beauchamp earned his fourth top-10 finish of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season Sunday at the Edmonton City Centre Airport in Edmonton.

Daniel Procopio took the loss on the mound for the Selects, who went undefeated in four round-robin games earlier in the week.

Procopio also added two RBIs at the plate while Brett Siddall and Ross Barker each had two hits for the Selects.

Connie Mack

Maidstone?s Skylar Janisse and the Ann Arbor Travelers are off to the AABC Connie Mack World Series after an undefeated weekend at the regionals in Battle Creek, Mich.

The right-hander pitcher had three strikeouts in two innings for the save in a 7-4 final win against the Illinois Sparks.

The Connie Mack world series is Aug. 3-10 in Farmington, New Mexico.
