American Family Fights to Bring Home Adopted Son From Russia ...

3:58 pm ET December 30, 2012

RussiaAdoptions

Russia?s President Vladimir Putin has banned adoptions of Russian children by Americans in retaliation for U.S. legislation that punishes human rights abuses. The ban also halts adoptions by American families that are already in progress.

Robert and Kim Summers are one of many families in the process of adopting a child from Russia. Today on Fox and Friends, they spoke out about their heartbreak and pleaded with both the Russian and U.S. governments to let them bring home their son, whom they?ve named Preston. Robert said they are emotionally drained, but remain hopeful they?ll bring him home within the two-week period that?s left.

The couple was supposed to return with their son on January 13, but Russia?s government offices will be closed for the next week and a half for the holidays. ?We don?t know where we?re at,? Kim said. ?Our son is still in [?] in the orphanage.?

Robert asked President Obama and the State Department to step in and help these children and families. Kim pleaded directly to Russia?s president: ?President Putin, please, you?re a father. You?re a father. It would be as if somebody ripped your child out of your arms. That?s how we feel. You?re tearing out our heart just for a political statement. It is so unfair to these children, it is so unfair. They deserve forever families.?

American families adopt more Russian children than any other country. Despite that fact, President Putin released the following statement, ?There are probably many places in the world where living standards are better than ours. So what? Shall we send all children there, or move there ourselves??

?It?s not a matter of whether it?s better to live here or better to live there,? Kim said. ?It?s that they?re getting loving families that can nurture them and develop them.?

Beijing targets those who cross the street 'with Chinese characteristics'

Beijing's 'strike hard' campaign aims to tame the anarchy that reigns at crosswalks and intersections. ?Our correspondent's take: 'Good luck.'

A new ?strike hard? campaign, launched last week, is aimed at ?bringing order to traffic and security? at the city?s intersections, according to the Beijing municipal police website.

Good luck to them.

The police appear to have been goaded into action not so much by the anarchy that has long reigned on most Beijing streets, but by an online comment that went viral a few weeks ago.

A blogger remarked ? entirely accurately ? that crossing the road with Chinese characteristics has nothing to do with whether the lights are red or green. The determining factor is how many people are waiting on the curb. Once a crowd has reached critical mass, it moves.

As more and more Beijingers buy cars, and drive them without necessarily bothering to get a license, life for the city?s crowds of pedestrians and its diminishing band of cyclists has grown increasingly hazardous.

Pedestrian fatalities in China are 18 times higher, per 100,000 motorized vehicles, than in the United States, according to Ni Ying, who did her doctoral thesis on the dangers of Chinese crossroads.

?High rates of pedestrian noncompliance and low rates of driver-yielding behavior? accounted for the Chinese statistics, she concluded.

Jaywalking is a national habit that the capital?s police would like to break, but they are not training their sights on pedestrians alone. The goal, says the official website warning, is also to enforce drivers? lane discipline and to stop cyclists crashing red lights, carrying passengers on the back seat, and riding the wrong way up cycle lanes.

This is nothing less than an assault on a fundamental right that all Chinese citizens hold dear: to do precisely as they please on the public highway.

Learning to 'Beijing it'

I walk, ride my bike, and drive my car all the time in Beijing, and frankly it is a miracle that I am still alive. Not least because after living here for six years, I have gone native when it comes to traffic etiquette.

I still recall the sense of pride with which I rode my bicycle the wrong way up a street for the first time, taking a call on my mobile phone. I felt like a true Beijinger. And the quaint idea that I should stop at a red light rather than weave a path through the cars getting in my way is one that I abandoned a long time ago.

I am better behaved behind the wheel of my 1980s Jeep Cherokee (an ideal, bullock-like vehicle in which to navigate the city?s traffic). But even then the frustration of watching other drivers jam up an intersection by ignoring the simplest rules of the road, not to mention elementary courtesy, can tempt me to barge into the melee myself.

In my family, we have coined a verb for the sort of inconsiderate and patently illegal behavior to which my wife and I occasionally sink, such as sailing past a highway traffic jam in the emergency vehicle lane: We call that ?to Beijing it.?

If the city police have their way, that kind of description will soon be history. But I wouldn?t hold my breath.

The Beijing police department is running a little quiz on its ?weibo,? a Twitter-like platform, asking people why they think Beijingers are so careless on the road. The two most popular answers so far are ?a weak sense of the law? and ?low levels of public morality and civic responsibility.?

It will take more than a few traffic fines to deal with those problems, I?m afraid. And I say that as one who, to his shame, knows whereof he speaks.

'YOLO,' 'fiscal cliff': 12 words that must be banned

?

By Jeff Karoub, The Associated Press

Spoiler alert: This story contains words and phrases that some people want to ban from the English language. "Spoiler alert" is among them. So are "kick the can down the road," "trending" and "bucket list."?

A dirty dozen have landed on the 38th annual List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. The nonbinding, tongue-in-cheek decree released Monday by northern Michigan's Lake Superior State University is based on nominations submitted from the United States, Canada and beyond.?

"Spoiler alert," the seemingly thoughtful way to warn readers or viewers about looming references to a key plot point in a film or TV show, nevertheless passed its use-by date for many, including Joseph Foly, of Fremont, Calif. He argued in his submission the phrase is "used as an obnoxious way to show one has trivial information and is about to use it, no matter what."?

At the risk of further offense, here's another spoiler alert: The phrase receiving the most nominations this year is "fiscal cliff," banished because of its overuse by media outlets when describing across-the-board federal tax increases and spending cuts that economists say could harm the economy in the new year without congressional action.?

"You can't turn on the news without hearing this," said Christopher Loiselle, of Midland, Mich., in his submission. "I'm equally worried about the River of Debt and Mountain of Despair."?

Other terms coming in for a literary lashing are "superfood," "guru," "job creators" and "double down."?

University spokesman Tom Pink said that in nearly four decades, the Sault Ste. Marie school has "banished" around 900 words or phrases, and somehow the whole idea has survived rapidly advancing technology and diminishing attention spans.?

Nominations used to come by mail, then fax and via the school's website, he said. Now most come through the university's Facebook page. That's fitting, since social media has helped accelerate the life cycle of certain words and phrases, such as this year's entry "YOLO" ? "you only live once."?

"The list surprises me in one way or another every year, and the same way every year: I'm always surprised how people still like it, love it," he said.?

Rounding out the list are "job creators/creation," "boneless wings" and "passion/passionate." Those who nominated the last one say they are tired of hearing about a company's "passion" as a substitute for providing a service or product for money.?

Andrew Foyle, of Bristol, England, said it's reached the point where "passion" is the only ingredient that keeps a chef from preparing "seared tuna" that tastes "like dust swept from a station platform."?

"Apparently, it's insufficient to do it ably, with skill, commitment or finesse," Foyle said. "Passionate, begone!"?

As usual, the etymological exercise ? or exorcise ? only goes so far. Past lists haven't eradicated "viral," "amazing," "LOL" or "man cave" from everyday use. ?

Which word or phrase would you MOST like to see banned?

A year to forget in Winnipeg sports [Photos]

Does Evander Kane posting this photo to Twitter signify the end of the honeymoon between the Jets and their fans? (TWITTER.COM)

Will Donald Fehr be able to negotiate an end to the lockout in time for a compressed season in 2013? (FRED THORNHILL/Reuters)

Will Bombers GM Joe Mack keep his job? (JASON HALSTEAD/Winnipeg Sun)

Will Buck Pierce be able to complete a successful season? (FRED GREENSLADE/Reuters)

Will the Bombers be able to capitalize on their new stadium? (COURTESY BOMBERS)

Report an error

Normally this is supposed to be a rumination of the year that was. A look back at some of the highlights of the last 12 months.

There. Done.

Seriously, 2012 will not go down as a memorable one for Winnipeg sports fans.

Going in, our local CFLers were supposed to follow up their 2011 Grey Cup appearance with another serious run at their first championship in more than two decades.

Instead, the Blue Bombers turned out to be a one-year wonder.

A few clicks to the east down Portage Avenue, there at least were some highs involving our pucksters.

But our exciting new taste for the NHL would turn more sour by the month, beginning with the Jets crash-and-burn from playoff contention and culminating with the hollow, clanging sound of yet another lockout.

Considering we had one the year before the original Jets bolted for Phoenix, I suppose it?s some sort of cruel symmetry we have one the year after they return.

Wasn?t 2012 also supposed to usher in an exciting new era in sports facilities in this town?

Alas, we?ve killed enough trees on that story.

Add it all up, and it?s enough to make a Winnipeg sports nut go nuts.

lnstead of revisiting the gory details, I thought we?d look ahead.

So here are five storylines worth watching going into what has to be a better year in the toy department.

Because it couldn?t get any worse ? could it?

Frozen Fallout

As of this writing, the NHL had cancelled games through Jan. 14, or more than half the season.

That doesn?t mean we can?t have a compressed 48-game campaign, probably with conference play only.

But the two sides are getting closer and closer to the edge of that cliff, as that type of season would have to start around Jan. 20.

You?d think the deadline would produce a deal, like most deadlines do in labour negotiations.

You wonder, though, how much anger the players and owners have stirred up in fans and sponsors, and how it?ll be manifested whenever they do get back on the ice.

End of the Honeymoon

On a related topic, a few members of the Jets have had bad off-seasons, led by Ondrej Pavelec?s drunk driving crash and conviction in the Czech Republic.

Others, defenceman Ron Hainsey ? the face of the lockout ? and winger Evander (Moneybags) Kane have simply raised the ire of fans looking for people to blame for not having hockey.

Coupled with the normal subsiding of the NHL honeymoon, does the local shinny shack become a less friendly place for the home side in 2013 and beyond?

?

?

Field of Dreams

The Bombers will finally move into that spectacular facility down at the U of M, and that will create quite a buzz on its own.

Until 2013?s opening kickoff, at least.

How the Bombers play in their new digs will either buff the place to an impressive shine and launch the team to new financial heights or tarnish it, hurting the team?s ability to ?maximize revenues,? as they say.

After last year ? the losing, the security clampdown, the firing of yet another head coach ? the Bombers don?t have a lot of credit in the fan goodwill account right now.

There shouldn?t be any empty seats in the first year of a facility that?s now costing $200 million.

If there are, it won?t help the Bombers as they begin repaying a whopping $95 million in debt.

Armed or Dangerous?

What happens at quarterback for the Bombers is the story to watch on the field in 2013.

There isn?t a team in the CFL more in flux at football?s most important position.

If the Bombers don?t get this right ? having Buck Pierce somehow complete a successful season or finding someone who can ? they will be doomed to extend the longest championship drought in franchise history to a 23rd year, and then some.

That?s a dangerous road to stay on, new stadium or not.

If the Bombers solve their quarterback problem, GM Joe Mack will have gone a long way to saving his job.

Entering the last year of his contract with a 21-35 record in games that matter, Mack needs to show CEO Garth Buchko he knows how to build a consistent winner, not just a team that stumbles into the Grey Cup game once in a while.

If the Bombers post another losing season, Buchko will be forced to undergo the difficult task of conducting a GM search, and the Bombers will be back at the drawing board. Again.

That would leave a lousy taste in the mouths of poor, downtrodden Bomber Nation.

It?s true head coach Tim Burke will be under the microscope in his first full season as head chef. But it?s Mack?s job to supply the ingredients.

So there?s you?re recipe for a successful 2013.

After the past year?s heartache, is that too much to ask?

How would rate 2012 for sports in Winnipeg?

The Asian Innovation Century, Again - Scott Anthony - Harvard ...

Over the last three years I have consistently stated my belief that Asia was emerging as a global innovation powerhouse. It's one of the primary reasons why I moved to Singapore in early 2010. In late 2011, I even wrote, "The overarching trend I continue to see is a shift in the world's innovation energy to the east."

While my long-term optimism remains, I think the region must overcome some very real hurdles before it can realize its potential. Some of these, like creaky infrastructure and a lack of a fully functioning risk-capital market, are straightforward and don't require further detailing. More pernicious and harder to address are three critical mindset shifts that need to happen.

First, there needs to be substantially higher tolerance for failure. The lack of failure tolerance can be rooted in laws ? long-lasting penalties for bankruptcies lead people to avoid risk. But it also can be from pressure from peers, family, friends, and co-workers. It can set early when children are in school. Innovation isn't random, but it isn't perfectly predictable either. Any success will have its twists, turns, and false starts. Some of history's most world-changing ideas were in fact accidental discoveries. A fear of failure can choke off innovation.

Second, hierarchical decision-making approaches need to shift to approaches that favor good ideas wherever they might come from. I remember vividly one experience at a large Asian company. We were working with a young middle manager that was developing a business plan for a new idea. It was quickly clear the idea stunk, and the middle manager knew it. I said, "If we all know this is a dog, why are we working on it?" The unsurprising answer was, "The boss likes it." The argument that the boss would ultimately be happier to not waste time on an idea that was destined to flop fell on deaf ears. Innovation can't be a largest-title-wins game; it has to be a legitimately best-idea wins. Senior leaders with wisdom and institutional knowledge can certainly spark great ideas, but so too can 20-somethings that lack preconceived notions and are living tomorrow today.

Third, companies, particularly large ones, need a dose of humility. Many executives in Asia are appropriately proud of their role in building world-class companies in relatively short periods of time. That success has come from discipline and focused execution. Unfortunately, those skills are less helpful in guiding innovation or leading a company through transformation. Some organizations display deep humility. For example, many executives in the Singapore Government have a deep curiosity, honed by spending time living overseas. They are always on the lookout for a good idea, wherever it might be. Other organizations, however, that lack appropriate humility will find the fall from greatness surprisingly swift and punishing.

These mindsets won't change overnight. Focused work by policymakers and corporate leaders in three areas can help:

  1. Encouraging intersections. Just as cross-breeding changes populations, cross-breeding can change mindsets. The more Asian leaders that spend time overseas, the more Asians educated in the West return home, the more Westerners spend time in Asia, the more historical mindsets will shift in some ways.
  2. Role modeling. Many Asian success stories over the past few decades involve heavy government intervention, family legacies, or founders that muscled into resource-intense industries. The more these success stories are balanced by innovators ? both in startups and large companies ? the more mindsets will shift.
  3. Balancing education. Many Asian countries have top-flight education systems. Yet, the overwhelming focus on facts and rote memorization can blunt students' creative edge. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shocked many Singaporeans earlier this year when he urged parents, "Please let your children have their childhood." The essence of the Prime Minister's argument is that encouraging free play and more balanced upbringing would ultimately lead to adults that had the curiosity, creativity, and willingness to fail that are so necessary in today's uncertain world.

Asia is as far from a monolith as you'll find in the world. Its people, cultures, heritages, religions, and customs are breathtakingly diverse. Imagine this diversity replicated in the business world. With the right mindset shifts, the vast well of innovation potential still lying dormant in Asia has the potential to change the world.

Ranch Property For Sale in Crown Point IN

If you are preparing to acquire a Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN, you should choose many crucial things prior to making the acquisition. Initially, you need to select the county in Crown Point IN where you wish to purchase a farm and ranch. Whether it will be Jasper, LaPorte, Lake, Porter or Newton ? it all depends on you. Decide on the county depending on the type of farm you wish to establish.

Setting up a Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN is fairly a strenuous project particularly if you do not have any sort of previous experience or understanding associated with farm building. Prior to jumping on to this venture, it is essential to determine the type of farm and ranch you want to produce. Pet ranches, bird farm, dairy products and poultry farm, or a farm that produces vegetables and fruits? you have to choose the kind of farm prior to advancing on the following steps. Due to the fact that each type has its own requirements, thus the land of the farm must be chosen according to the kind you want to construct. When you have actually made that choice, it is time for you to move forward.

Discover an Experienced Real estate agent to obtain a Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN

To develop a Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN, you would require the solutions of a best Farm or Rural Land real estate broker. Usually, realtors have a much better understanding of city home and homes; there are few realtors whose skills lies in farming and rural areas. Contact an agent of that sort: the one who is educated about farms and rural real estate. Discuss your requirements and spending plan with your real estate agent so he can show you lands as per your needs. Ask him to reveal you at least eight or ten great locations so you have an assortment to choose from. Never settle on the first rural real estate you see. It is most effectively to keep your choices open as you could find a land best and much more inexpensive than the first one. Therefore, be extremely sensible in making that choice. You will certainly be investing a good-looking quantity of cash in the land so you have to be extremely sure before acquiring the farmland. Ask your real estate agent to show you currently constructed farms along with home for creating a farm from scratch. If you are able to locate an established farm at a reasonable rate, it will certainly be wiser to experience that package.

Assess the Area of Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN

Whenever you are shown some property to create a ranch, assess it minutely and see that you understand every nitty-gritty of it. You should find out about all the agriculturalist?s markets near to that farm area. If your circulation channels and farmer?s market are found at a great distance from that location, it will certainly not be that convenient for you. Even if you are being offered a good cost for that Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN, you will certainly not be saving much in the long run, as your fuel and transportation prices will certainly be too high. As a result, it is an advantage to have a ranch close to your providers and markets. This will certainly not just conserve your cash but also will certainly stop the waste of time.

Yet another important thing you need to evaluate is the land history where you want to create your ranch. Ask the vendor to offer every information of that location. Generally, vendors often hold off any sort of unfavorable info so it will be much better if you talk to some of the neighboring farms in that area. Learn about the type of land and any issue attached to it. Commonly rural lands have irrigation and flooding difficulties; or their soil is too saline for the crops to grow, or occasionally that land was used as a dumping site, or perhaps its water is contaminated. Besides this, some lands may have pests or unsafe pets roaming around. Examine the sort of the ground of that farm by using NRCS web soil studies. In addition, you need to see whether that farmland gets enough sunlight for you to grow vegetables and fruits.

Besides these information, you should inspect its infrastructure. Are there any sort of roadways linked to your farm? Is there a barn or will you have to build one? Are there any fencing or any type of farm devices and devices currently offered? You would absolutely avoid finalizing the Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN that do not have the needs and for that, you need to stay vigilant.

Wrapping up the Procurement of Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN

The farm acquiring procedure ultimately reaches the final stage when you have selected an area or a currently established ranch. Now you need to settle the agreement with the vendor and do all the paperwork. If you are getting the right of easement, undergo all the reports and easement papers thoroughly. You do not wish to wind up signing on a contract that does not prefer you; so be really heedful while taking care of the documentation concerns.

Involve an attorney or a professional realtor to help you with these affairs. In addition, if you are buying the farm area, then you need to be added cautious. Make sure that there is no provision that allows other people to enter your farm without your permission. Additionally, if you discover any sort of malfunctioning clause, talk to the vendor immediately. An essential thing is the tax connected with that farmland. Attempt to get a farm in unique tax zone? these zones pay less tax. If you want to mortgage the land or in case you are planning to obtain a loan, check with the farming banks. These banks are produced to aid farmers and have offers for them. ?The Agriculturalist?s Bank? is one such bank in Indiana. You can easily get in touch with it and get a proper loan so you can have your very own Farm and Ranch in Crown Point IN. It provides both individual and business financial solutions.

LONDON (AP) ? Sydney's skyline erupted with tons of exploding fireworks in the first major celebration of 2013, extravagant displays lit up Hong Kong and Beijing, and increasingly democratic Myanmar joined the party for the first time in almost five decades.

Asia welcomed the New Year on a grand scale, partying with renewed optimism despite the so-called fiscal cliff threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economies of Europe, where the party was expected to be a bit more subdued.

Celebrations were planned around the world, culminating with the crystal ball drop in New York City's Times Square. One million people are expected to cram into the area for the countdown.

Global celebrations began Monday in Sydney, where the balmy summer night was split by 7 tons of fireworks fired from roof tops and barges, many cascading from the Sydney Harbor Bridge, in a 6.6 million Australian dollar ($6.9 million) pyrotechnic extravaganza billed by organizers as the world's largest.

In a field in increasingly democratic Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, about 90,000 people experienced the country's first public New Year countdown, after almost five decades under military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings.

"This is very exciting and also our first experience in celebrating the New Year at a big countdown gathering. We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a university student who came with three of her friends.

In austerity-hit Europe, the mood was more restrained ? if hopeful. In Athens, fireworks over the ancient Acropolis will usher in 2013 ? projected to be a sixth straight year of recession amid the country's worst economic crisis since World War II.

Still, In his televised New Year's Eve message, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras promised Greeks that the worst of the crisis is past, and declared 2013 a "year of hope" that will see the beginning of the country's rebirth.

Celebrating New Year's Eve with a vespers service in in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Benedict XVI said that despite all the death and injustice in the world, goodness prevails.

In his homily, Benedict said taking time to meditate in prolonged reflection and prayer can help "find healing from the inevitable wounds of daily life."

In Hong Kong, tens of thousands of people lined the Victoria Harbor to view this year's 12.5 million Hong Kong dollar ($1.6 million) fireworks display, said to be the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city.

One day after dancing in the snow to celebrate the first anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander, North Koreans marked the arrival of the new year, marked as "Juche 102" on North Korean calendars. Juche means self-reliance, the North Korean ideology of independence promoted by national founder Kim Il Sung, who was born 102 years ago. His grandson now rules North Korea.

In New Delhi, the festive mood was marred by the death Saturday of a young rape victim.

Hotels, clubs and residents' associations in the Indian capital decided to cancel planned festivities and asked people to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim whose plight sparked public rallies for women's safety.

Jakarta's street party centers on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) thoroughfare closed to all traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers erected 16 large stages along the normally car-clogged, eight-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and is bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to Indonesians.

In the Philippines, where many are recovering from devastation from a recent typhoon, health officials have hit upon a successful way to stop revelers from setting off huge illegal firecrackers that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year.

A health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean star PSY and danced to his Youtube hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said.

Economic problems weighed down the festive atmosphere in Europe. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel's New Year message warned her country to prepare for difficult economic times ahead. The Cypriot capital, Nicosia, decided to cancel its New Year celebrations in light of the economic crisis. Nicosia said 16,000 euros ($21,000) saved from the canceled event will be given to some 320 needy schoolchildren.

But Scotland's Edinburgh, which traditionally hosts one of the biggest New Year's Eve parties in Europe, remains in good spirits. Organizers say that some 75,000 people are expected for the Scottish capital's Hogmanay ? or year-end ? celebrations.

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese New Year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

Speaker Boehner got standing ovation? Vice President Biden finds possible path out of fiscal cul de sac?

See below from FNC?s Chad Pergram ?

?

Urgent: The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Hill (Evening edition)

Per Pergram-Capitol Hill

?

The short-hand.

?

? They failed to advance any potential deal to solve the fiscal cliff

? Failed to resolve the farm bill

? Failed to resolve the standoff over the emergency spending bill for Sandy.

?

I was told within the house that there is still some chatter between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Vice President Biden this evening about a path out of this fiscal cliff cul-de-sac.

?

House Republicans met in their conference meeting this evening, giving House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) a standing ovation. Emerging from the meeting, members, almost to a T, all turned the criticism on the Senate and said that they House cannot act until the Senate moves first.

?

Also, three versions of a farm bill extension remain on revved up, ready to go. The biggest worry is the end of the dairy compact?which could send milk prices skyrocketing. But not for a while. An expiration of the farm bill means the U.S. returns to 1949 law?which could double the price of milk. However, implementing such an ancient law would take weeks. So don?t expect to pay double just to put milk on your Cheerios come Tuesday.

?

There is a chance that the House could consider some sort of modified extension of the farm bill?or maybe?.something specific to dairy. Remember, the Senate passed its version of the farm bill months ago. We still don?t have the House schedule for tomorrow at this hour. But it will meet at 9 am et.

?

Also expect a GOP Conference meeting at some point tomorrow.

?

The Senate is in at 11 am. Look for remarks off the top from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and McConnell. We doubt they will have caucus/conference meetings before 11 am.

?

Also, as Ed Henry has reported?it is possible they could POSSIBLY dispatch Vice President Biden to the Hill if they seem like they are getting close to a fiscal cliff deal. But that is a long way away.

?

Finally, there has been some chatter this evening about potentially crafting a narrow emergency spending bill for hurricane Sandy. The Senate completed its big bill on Friday. The House could always do something that covers just a few billion dollars?

?

Or?

?

If they ever get a deal on the fiscal cliff, that provision could be loaded onto that package.

?

Sunday musings: Competing cell phone fates, hotels unbundling ...

From planes to hotels to rental cars, here are issues that have different facets. Is using a cell phone on flights heaven or hell? How much can hotels deduct from their room rates in their drive toward a la carte prices? When do you need rental-car collision damage waiver?

Cell hell or cell bliss in the air

?Which is worse: not being able to use a mobile phone while on board an aircraft?or being able to do so?? That is the opening of a thoughtful article that ran in The Economist.

As the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) begin to look into allowing the use of certain electronic equipment during take-off and landing, the question of cell phone use rages into the forefront. If the only discussion were about reading a novel on one?s Kindle or iPhone, the discussions might be civil and strictly limited to technology. But when cell phones are involved, human passions explode.

And, what about all the rulebreakers. I personally know of many who leave cell phones on and continue to text during take-off. I have forgotten a cell phone in my carry-on luggage only to hear it ringing as the plane rolls down the runway.

Just about the last thing most people want is to be trapped next to someone nattering endlessly into a mobile phone, oblivious of everyone within forced earshot. Rudeness and lack of consideration know no bounds for some folk. And sad to report, as mobile phones have proliferated, such crass behaviour is no longer the isolated exception within an otherwise civil crowd. Were the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to relax its rule banning the use of mobile phones once an aircraft leaves the ground, there would be fist-fights aplenty above the clouds.

There are dozens of anecdotal reports of instruments on the flight-deck being affected by passengers using portable electronic devices, or PEDs as they are known in aviation circles. Unfortunately, duplicating these under controlled conditions has proved nigh-on impossible. Both Airbus and Boeing have bombarded their aircraft with electromagnetic radiation at frequencies and power levels used by mobile phones, only to come away empty handed.

In practice, then, the chance of unintentional transmitters doing any harm is infinitesimal. Indeed, that is just as well, because flight crews have had permission from the FAA to use portable computers called ?electronic flight bags? in the cockpit since the early 1990s. Today, they carry iPads and other tablets as replacements for the bulky aircraft operating manuals, flight-crew manuals and navigation charts. These portable electronic devices are in much closer proximity to the aircraft?s avionics than anything passengers are likely to bring aboard, and remain switched on throughout the flight.

As hotels follow airline ?unbundling? with their own ?decontenting? where does it stop?

Where airlines removed customer service items from their airfares and force passengers to cough up more money for things like checked baggage, reserved seats and food; hotels are moving in a different direction, providing discounts to clients who opt out of services like daily room cleaning, fresh towels, breakfast and so on.

The addition of resort fees has already drawn the ire of the FTC and the commission has been studying drip-pricing for some time. Many see the hotel moves as a shift towards a system that will allow for drip pricing or, in its present opt-out form, reverse drip pricing.

Is change coming? According to a recent study, ??almost 80% of respondents were willing to barter for the daily cleaning.? That means they would opt-out of the service for a reduction in room rate, food and beverage coupons or hotel loyalty points.

Or, do we love our amenities such as the chocolate on the pillow and tiny bottles of exotic shampoos and conditioner that we might never purchase ourselves? Money talks.

Known as decontenting, guests are prompted at check-in to opt out of daily housekeeping services with primary compensations including additional loyalty points, room discounts or food-and-beverage vouchers. Many independents and a few major brands, notably select Westin hotels, are already employing this alternative tactic.

Decontenting can pertain to much more than just housekeeping?bathroom amenities are another obvious occurrence, but also think basic cable, breakfasts, newspapers and even the comfort of meeting a person at check-in instead of completing this process via a mobile device. Ask yourself: At what point does a hotel stop being a hotel and become an a la carte service?

Rental car companies keep the pressure on when it comes to collision damage waivers (CDW)

Ed Perkins explains the basics of rental car CDW. He notes that, ?The rental companies are happy ? eager, in fact ? to sell you CDW, through which they waive their right to collect anything from you in case the car is damaged while in your possession.? But do you need it? That?s another question.

When you rent a car, the base rate does not cover you for collision damage ? physical damage to the car you?ve rented ? so you absolutely need a way to protect yourself against that substantial financial risk. Over the years, a ?standard model? of rental car insurance has evolved.

I strongly recommend that you take pictures of a car when you first take possession and again when you return it. These days, just about everybody has a smartphone with a good enough camera. Those pictures can be invaluable when a rental company tries to fob off a previous renter?s damage on you because the previous driver bought CDW and you didn?t.

Cain Velasquez reclaims UFC heavyweight title

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Cain Velasquez waited 13 miserable months for the chance to put the UFC heavyweight belt back around his waist.

When he finally got Junior Dos Santos back in the cage, Cain didn't waste another minute.

Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, thoroughly battering Dos Santos on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision in UFC 155.

Velasquez (11-1) took early control of the rematch of his only career loss, flooring the Brazilian champion with a big right hand midway through the first round. Velasquez spent most of the match stalking and pounding on Dos Santos (15-2), who never fully recovered from the first-round shot that left him swollen and woozy.

"I was so tired, but I had to endure," Velasquez said. "My coaches and everybody helped me so much. He's tough, too. ... It feels so good to get this. This is my wife's Christmas present. I promised her I would do this."

Velasquez won every round on every judge's scorecard in the UFC's traditional year-end event in its hometown. The three judges scored the bout for Velasquez 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. The Associated Press also favored Velasquez 50-44, giving a 10-8 advantage to Velasquez in the first round.

Dos Santos took the UFC belt away from Velasquez in November 2011 in just 64 seconds, earning a first-round stoppage victory with one vicious overhand right in Anaheim, Calif. Velasquez refused to blame a knee injury for his only defeat ? but in the rematch, he demonstrated exactly what he can do at full strength.

"I knew that Junior was a tough striker and he was able to end our last fight that way, so I was prepared for him this time," Velasquez said. "I was able to effectively use my striking and my grappling to control him throughout the fight and get the title back."

Jim Miller won a narrow unanimous decision over Joe Lauzon in a sensationally bloody fight on the undercard, and rising middleweight Costa Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third rounds. Yushin Okami grappled his way past Alan Belcher and Derek Brunson easily beat veteran Chris Leben.

But 12,423 fans bought a record $3.2 million in tickets at the MGM Grand Garden to see the second meeting in what seems certain to be a memorable heavyweight trilogy ? although UFC President Dana White said Velasquez is likely to fight again, probably against Alistair Overeem, while Dos Santos heals.

"I don't know if you saw (Dos Santos) after the fight, but he looked terrible," White said. "It's going to be a while until he starts training again."

Dos Santos' loss was his first in the UFC in 10 fights with mixed martial arts' dominant promotion, and his first defeat anywhere since November 2007. Dos Santos expected the rematch to last longer, but also predicted a second knockout.

Instead, Dos Santos barely avoided getting stopped in the first round, and he headed straight to a hospital after the bout with what White thought was a broken jaw.

"His game was very effective, and tonight he was better than me," Dos Santos said. "It's not usual for me to take a punch, but he walks forward all the time. His takedowns, his grappler game is very effective, so congratulations for him."

Velasquez immediately showed the rematch would bear little resemblance to the first fight, pursuing Dos Santos from the opening bell and quickly backing up the champion. Velasquez then floored Dos Santos with that huge right to the head midway through the round, and Dos Santos had to cover up in the corner while barely surviving an onslaught of strikes and ground-and-pound.

After brusquely swatting aside his stool and choosing to stand in his corner between rounds, Velasquez went to work on the ground in the second, and the former Arizona State wrestler repeatedly got the boxing specialist into bad positions.

Dos Santos struggled to regain his rhythm, and Velasquez managed another takedown early in the third round before repeatedly tagging the champion with shots that left his face discolored and puffy.

At the final bell, Velasquez collapsed on his back at the center of the cage, pointing skyward with both hands. Although Overeem is tops among several heavyweights who would like a title shot, a third bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos can't be too far away.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said (last year), I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos' win over Velasquez last year in the UFC's first fight on American network television catapulted the hard-punching Brazilian heavyweight into an international spotlight. Both fighters injured their knees in the month leading up to their first fight, but stayed in the bout because of its importance.

Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir earlier this year and got a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike while emerging as one of the promotion's most likable stars.

Miller and Lauzon also turned in one of the UFC's best fights of 2012 in its final show, starting when Miller opened a gaping gash over Lauzon's right eye early in the first round. Blood gushed out of Lauzon's face and onto the canvas, yet he blinked it away and survived the round to a standing ovation.

Lauzon bled substantially for the final two rounds, yet traded big shots with Miller and even took down his fellow veteran, although submission holds were nearly impossible due to the blood slickening both fighters' bodies. Miller narrowly avoided two submission attempts by Lauzon in the final seconds before celebrating his second win in four fights.

"Joe Lauzon is a tough kid," Miller said. "I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to. That's how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

After two dull main-card bouts resulted in wins for Okami and Brunson, Philippou (12-2) and Boetsch entertained the crowd ? but Boetsch (16-5) left his first loss in two years with big cuts on his forehead and nose along with an apparently injured hand. Philippou was impressive in his fifth straight victory, winning as a fairly late replacement for Chris Weidman, his training partner.

In the early fights, veteran Jamie Varner (21-7-1) continued his comeback with a split-decision victory over Melvin Guillard (47-13-3), and heavyweight Todd Duffee (9-2) returned to the UFC after an acrimonious 2?-year absence with a nasty first-round knockout victory over Phil De Fries.

DIY Machinable Wax for Your Lathe or Mill

DIY Machinable Wax for Your Lathe or MillIf you have a CNC machine, lathe, or mill and like to use plastic blocks for prototyping the material cost can add up quickly if you're prolific or make a lot of mistakes. Consider using machinable wax?a very hard wax that is reusable and won't gum up the cutting surfaces of the equipment like pure paraffin or beeswax.

Instructables user rawkstar320 figured out that if you melt paraffin wax from any hobby store in a deep fryer and one-at-a-time add in several plastic shopping bags (use recycling symbol #2 or #4 only). Continue adding bags until they won't dissolve anymore and pour the wax into a mold (perhaps a loaf pan) to cool. Keep in mind that paraffin will melt at 300 degrees Fahrenheit but if you get it to 400 it will ignite so keep an eye on your temperature with a candy thermometer.

The resulting wax will be very hard, works well in metal machining equipment, and the shavings can be remelted into your next block.

Argentina to court: revert order on debt holdouts

Argentina is asking a US appeals court to reverse an order for the country to pay $1.33 billion to "holdout" creditors who refused to join two swaps for the country's defaulted debt.

Argentine government lawyers said in papers filed late Friday that the order violates the country's sovereignty. The lawyers said the order also threatens service on at least $24 billion of the county's restructured sovereign debt, impairs the rights of third parties and puts global debt markets at risk.

"The Amended Injunctions have no basis in law, are inequitable, and threaten to wreak havoc on countless innocent third parties, which have already suffered losses due to the plunge in their bonds' value provoked by the insecurity that the Amended Injunctions have created in the market for Argentina's New York law-governed bonds," the briefing said.

"This harm to private and sovereign creditors, as well as to New York law and New York as a place to do business, will only grow if the Amended Injunctions are affirmed. "

The U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ordered the country on Oct. 26 to pay the holdouts an equal amount whenever it makes payments on other debt that has been restructured since the country's economic collapse 11 years ago.

It agreed with U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa, who ruled that with more than $40 billion in foreign reserves, Argentina can afford to pay. The ruling gave Argentina a difficult choice: pay all bondholders equally, or pay none of them and risk going into default.

The court then returned the case to Griesa who ordered Argentina to pay the $1.33 billion into escrow for holders of its defaulted debt and banned banks and other third parties from intervening. Griesa based his ruling on the principle of "pari passu," or equal footing, which says debtors can't pick and choose between creditors.

President Cristina Fernandez called Griesa's ruling "judicial colonialism," and Argentina sidestepped the impending economic chaos when the order was suspended by the appeals court on Nov. 28.

But just the threat of the payment deadline set by Griesa had harsh outcomes. In the week after he issued his order, the cost of maintaining Argentina's overall debt soared in trading on U.S. and European bond markets and the cost of insuring those debts spiked.

"A court can arguably enjoin a foreign state from engaging in a commercial activity within the United States. But it cannot issue an order to force or preclude a foreign sovereign to act or not act within the limits of that sovereign's own territory," Argentina's brief said.

"By dictating to Argentina that it cannot pay moneys it owes to the exchange bondholders in a funds transfer in its own country, and commanding that it make a payment (including via escrow) to holdout creditors that it is precluded from paying under its own laws, the Amended Injunctions violate this fundamental principle."

Argentina, however, said it's willing to make concessions. To end the lengthy dispute, government lawyers said the country is willing to ask Congress to give holdout creditors the same treatment as those who joined a 2010 debt swap.

"The only definitive and equitable solution to pari passu claims that would bring legal and economic certainty is to treat plaintiffs and all other similarly situated claimants equitably on the same terms as participants in (Argentina's) 2010 Exchange Offer," the brief said.
