How Android and iOS ruined this fake wedding, according to Windows Phone

We can all stipulate that holding up your phone at a wedding like that is kind of a douche move, right? Could be worse, though -- they could all be carrying annoying safety day-glo nuclear green phones or something.

And you gotta love the "Do not attempt" fine print.

Meanwhile, Android activated another thousand devices in the time it took you to watch that commercial.

Google releases Glass intro video to help us all get started

New Project Glass YouTube channel starts up with an intro video for us all to enjoy, and wonder at

Despite being a long time out from the general consumer release of Project Glass, it's hard to deny that it's the hot ticket right now. The first units are in the hands of the lucky 'Explorers,' while the rest of us mere mortal, non-Glass wearing folks can simply look on in awe.

We can at least get a look at the first in what's likely a series of tutorial videos for Glass released by Google, though. The new Project Glass YouTube channel has uploaded its first video, a getting started guide to Glass. We see a very quick, basic run through of how you operate it, and a look at the Google Now style card UI. It's exciting stuff, for sure, so if you're into Glass, be sure to keep an eye on the Project Glass YouTube channel.

Review: Sony BTX500 wireless Bluetooth speaker

If you?ve ever wanted to coax big sound from some tiny MP3 player on the go and without wires, you?ve got to love your growing wealth of options. What once seemed like a niche space ? really, how often does anyone need a completely wireless speaker? ? has blossomed into a surprisingly thriving market.

Anyone desperate for a speaker they can take to a picnic or a cookout, or even an small impromptu house party, suddenly has a wealth of options. There?s the Big Jambox from Jawbone and Bose?s Soundlink and Pioneer?s new line of portable speakers. And now there?s a smartly designed new kid on the block in Sony?s SRS-BTX500.

At $299, the BTX500 sits at the high end of a host of mobile Bluetooth speakers from Sony. The smallest is the SRS-BTV5, and a step up from that there?s the BTX300. Both are solid speakers in their own right, but the BTX500 is easily the most impressive of the three. It?s a bit of a space eater and it?s hardly suitcase-friendly (leave that to the BTX300), but aside from that, it can hold its own with any device in a suddenly crowded market.

Sony gives you a Bluetooth speaker that does everything, and it likely needs just about every one of its four-plus pounds to do so. Sony bundles in a speakerphone, USB charging capabilities, and ever-increasingly popular NFC technology for easy, one-tap Bluetooth connections. Some devices ? most notably, the iPhone ? aren?t supporting NFC, but Sony?s making a big push for it in 2013, and the early results certainly seem solid.

The sheer size of the BTX ? it more than a foot long and a half-foot high ? makes it seem unappealing as a travel item, but Sony bundles in a cloth carrying case (unlike Jawbone, which sells a separate case for its Big Jambox), and yes, despite its size, the speaker can fit into your luggage.

The implication is clear: This is a do-it-all speaker, the kind that should be able to meet a variety of needs.

RELATED: REVIEW: SONY'S SRS-BTV5 WIRELESS SPEAKER

I?ve seen other devices take this similar approach, of course, and it truly challenging. Too many gadgets chase this ideal, falling into a jack-of-all-trades trap. But Sony maintains its focus here, and it starts with quality sound, which Sony delivers in abundance here.

The BTX500 delivers impressively powerful and impactful sound, starting with the bass. You?ll hear some solid thump in Jay-Z?s ?Can I Get a What What,? far more thump than you?d get from the Soundlink. Clarity doesn?t suffer, though, and you won?t get any sense of crackling or distortion until you approach something around 90% of full volume. Even then, for music at least, it?s not noticeable enough to be truly distracting.

I found listening to music to be a joy on the BTX500, and movie viewing was equally impressive. The BTX500 also did a tremendous job of enhancing my gaming experience, pairing easily with the PS Vita and delivering clear and great voice reproduction (with the slightest hint of latency, as usual) in Soul Sacrifice.

Sony?s ability to nail the sound quality in the BTX makes the other features that much more enjoyable. First off, the unit looks attractive with a solid black speaker front and brushed aluminum along the sides. The buttons are well-placed, and pairing and other features such as MegaBass are intuitive. A glowing blue light bar completes the design, and the entire look exudes understated, sophisticated polish.

On the back side sits an easy flipstand, a charging port, an audio in jack, and that USB charging port. The USB charging port?s usefulness is limited since it?s only usable when the speaker is plugged in, but it?s a nice touch nonetheless.

There are a few downsides, but none are dealbreakers. The cloth carrying case is a brilliant protective touch, but Sony leaves no room for the charging adapter in that package. That little omission is made slightly more noticeable by the BTX500?s battery life. You can get 6 to 8 hours out of it, but if you?ve taken it on a road trip west, you?ll wish you could easily package charger and unit in the same space. No such luck. And while the speakerphone gets the job done, it?s hardly Jambox-level.

Then again, nearly every one of these new Bluetooth speakers has a handful of flaws, so you can?t dock Sony too much. If you value ideal sound over size, though, this is the Bluetooth speaker for you.

Google starts including activity from select apps in search results

Well, it looks like you can soon expect to see yet more information to the right of your Google search results. The company's announced today that it has begun integrating activity from certain apps into its results, with a number of music and movie services the first in line. Expectedly, the common denominator among them is that they all use Google+ as a sign-in option, which lets Mountain View pull together things like aggregate user activity and the most popular movies and music from Fandango, Deezer, Flixster, SoundCloud and a handful of others. As usual, those features are getting rolled out gradually, with the initial batch of app results said to be rolling out to desktop search over the next few weeks, and additional apps and improvements promised over time.

Samsung Galaxy S4 16GB comes with just 8.82GB of free space

In October of last year, shortly before the launch of the Surface RT tablet, Microsoft revealed that the 32GB version of the device actually included just 20GB of free space for users. The tech community erupted into a fit of collective outrage, with many insinuating that Microsoft was somehow misleading users with how it was advertising its devices.

The fact remains, of course, that devices that come with operating systems, restore partitions, and pre-installed software of any kind, don't avail the full advertised storage space to users. Even so, some users may be frustrated to learn that the cheapest version of Samsung's new Galaxy S4 comes with almost half of its onboard storage consumed.?

The S4 offers a range of storage options, including 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The smallest of these is heavily impacted by the large footprint of pre-installed software, which collectively eats up around 45% of the handset's integrated storage, as Geek.com notes. Of the 16GB of space, just 8.82GB remains for users, with the rest being consumed by the Android OS, and an extensive list of pre-loaded apps, including some of Samsung's own software such as its S Voice, S Translator and S Health apps.?

Let's try not to overreact here though. This is precisely why Samsung provides a choice of storage options; if that 8.82GB of onboard storage isn't enough for you, then you can always opt for one of the models with more space for your files - and don't forget that the handset offers a microSD card slot to allow you to flexibly extend your storage at a later date.?

Alexandria, VA To what extent is the United States energy independent? In recent years, Americans have heard a lot about the need to be unconstrained from foreign energy sources, but what do the numbers really tell us about our current state of independence?

Historically, the United States has relied on a diverse energy mix. From our founding through the final years of World War II, the country was nearly 100 percent energy independent: relying on coal- and oil-fired power plants, as well as a series of massive hydroelectric dams. By the second half of the 20th century, our growing demand for electricity resulted in a nationwide electric grid fed not only by domestic coal and hydropower, but also nuclear energy and natural gas. By then, we were also importing petroleum to fuel our burgeoning transportation system. In 2005, 31 percent of the total energy consumed in the U.S. was from imports. However, due to recent advances in natural gas drilling and recovery technology, in 2011 U.S. dependence on imports for total energy consumption had decreased to 19 percent.

Is the United States poised to regain energy independence? What would the implications be for national security and international relations going forward?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet line-up with a 7-inch screen

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet lineup with a 7inch screen

If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy Tablet wasn't your cup of tea, perhaps Samsung's new seven-inch model will hit your screen-size sweet spot. The Galaxy Tab 3 has gone official and the third iteration of the company's first Android tablet arrives with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage (with expansion up to 64GB), a 3- and 1.3-megapixel camera array and a substantial 4,000mAh battery. That 7-inch WSVGA (1,024 x 600) TFT display suggests it's likely to be a keenly-priced slate, although we're still waiting to hear on specifics. Samsung's loaded up the Galaxy Tab 3 with Android 4.1 and says that the WiFi version will launch "globally" in May, while an incoming 3G model (no LTE at this point, but it'll be able to make calls) will follow in June.

Two bizarre endings mar UFC 159 prelims

The UFC debut of two Strikeforce light heavyweights was spoiled by a odd ending. Ovince St-Preux beat Gian Villante in a majority technical decision after the fight was stopped because of an eyepoke.

After a back-and-forth, not entirely thrilling bout, St-Preux threw a punch and accidentally poked Villante in the eye. Villante stepped back and crouched down, indicating to referee Kevin Mulhall that there was a problem with the eye. Mulhall asked Villante if he could see, and Villante said no, he couldn't see.

At that point, Mulhall waved his arms and the fight was stopped. Villante protested, but the fight was over. Because the round had started, it had to be judged. The scores were 30-28, 29-28 and 29-29 in St-Preux's favor.

?I couldn?t see. He did poke me in the eye so I don?t know," Villante said after the fight. "He said the fight was over and I didn?t expect that because I was just reacting to his question. I got poked and my eye was closed up so I thought he would stop it but he didn?t he just kind of looked at me. I don?t understand how you score thirty seconds of a round and that?s how I lost? We were just getting going and I got poked in the eye. I don?t know what to say.?

Mulhall's stoppage followed the rule of the eyepoke rule, if not the spirit. When a fighter says he can't see, the fight is stopped. However, Mulhall could have used better communication and adherence to procedures. It would have been better if he explained to Villante that he didn't have time to recover and that the fight would be stopped if he said he couldn't see.

UFC 159's weird streak continued in the very next bout. Rustam Khabilov and Yancy Medeiros' fight was stopped halfway through the first round. Medeiros defended a Khabilov takedown attempt, but hit his hand awkwardly. His thumb ended up pointing a way thumbs are not supposed to point and the bout was stopped at 2:32 of the first round.

Two weird endings marred the preliminary card, but the UFC rarely lets a weird ending go. Quite often, these fights get a rematch, so don't be shocked if you see these fights happen again on a card this summer.

Affirmations for Self-Improvement | tmcelvany

This article talks about how ?the more we practice having thoughts or beliefs that benefit our well-being, the more naturally those thoughts and beliefs will play themselves out in our everyday life,? as long as these affirmations you repeat to yourself are ?congruent with reality, and aligned with your core values.?

This is a very corny article on the surface, but the message about mindfulness and the list of affirmations are great. Really try to give this article a chance and see what it has to offer for your own life.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock market finished lower on Friday as natural resource stocks slumped and market sentiment soured following U.S. economic growth data that fell short of expectations. U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent rate, an increase from the fourth quarter's dismal 0.4 percent pace but shy of the 3 percent growth analysts were hoping for. The weaker-than-expected data in Canada's biggest trading partner weighed on Canadian stocks.

Vodafone investors want bigger bid or full takeover by Verizon

LONDON (Reuters) - Six major Vodafone investors said $100 billion was not enough for the British company's stake in its U.S. joint venture with Verizon Communications , and urged the latter to come up with an offer of at least $120 billion. Their comments followed a Reuters report on Wednesday that Verizon had hired advisers to prepare a possible $100 billion bid to buy Vodafone's 45 percent stake in their Verizon Wireless joint venture, likely to be structured as a roughly 50:50 cash and stock bid.

TransCanada sees Keystone XL delayed till second-half 2015

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - TransCanada Corp , Canada's No. 2 pipeline company, said on Friday the long wait for U.S. government approval of its controversial Keystone XL project will further delay completion of the pipeline and push its cost above the company's $5.3 billion estimate. TransCanada, which reported a 27 percent rise in first-quarter profit on Friday, is waiting for the Obama administration to issue a presidential permit for construction of the line, which is designed to carry 830,000 barrels a day of Canadian and U.S. crude oil to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

U.S. sues Novartis over kickbacks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Friday announced its second civil fraud lawsuit against Novartis AG in four days, accusing a unit of the Swiss drugmaker of paying multimillion-dollar kickbacks to doctors in exchange for prescribing its drugs. Authorities said the Basel-based company for a decade lavished healthy speaking fees and "opulent" meals, including a nearly $10,000 dinner for three at the Japanese restaurant, Nobu, to induce doctors to prescribe its drugs.

Chevron profit pinched by cheaper oil, but beats estimates

(Reuters) - Lower oil prices bit into Chevron Corp's quarterly profit as did refinery downtime and higher operating costs in its home market, but the oil company's shares rose as the earnings topped expectations. Analysts cited foreign currency gains that gave the company a particular boost in the quarter.

Mothers group petitions Disney over sick pay laws

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Representatives of a national organization of mothers were prevented on Thursday from delivering a petition to Walt Disney World accusing it of trying to block laws that would require companies to provide paid sick leave for employees. Valeant in talks to buy Actavis for over $13 billion: WSJ

(Reuters) - Canada's biggest listed drug maker, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc , is in talks to buy generic drugmaker Actavis Inc for more than $13 billion, Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The companies had been working towards an all-stock deal, when some of Actavis' directors came out against it around the middle of this week. But executives on the two sides are still working to resurrect the deal, the journal said.

Dollar falls against the yen; bond yields decline

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar tumbled against the yen on Friday after the Bank of Japan left its monetary policy unchanged, while benchmark U.S. bond yields fell to near 4-1/2-month lows after the U.S. economy grew less than expected in the first quarter. The disappointing growth rate spurred concerns about a tepid outlook for the United States which, along with recent concerns that China's growth is slowing, also hit the price of oil. Brent crude fell to just above $103 a barrel after rising $3 in the past two sessions.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Aviation Administration said that the U.S. air traffic system will resume normal operations by Sunday evening after lawmakers rushed a bill through Congress allowing the agency to withdraw furloughs of air traffic controllers and other workers.

The FAA said it has suspended all employee furloughs and that traffic facilities will begin returning to regular staffing levels over the next 24 hours. The furloughs were fallout from the $85 billion in automatic-across-the-board spending cuts this spring.

They started to hit air traffic controllers this past week, causing flight delays that left thousands of travelers frustrated and furious. Planes were forced to take off and land less frequently, so as not to overload the remaining controllers on duty.

The FAA had no choice but to cut $637 million as its share of $85 billion in automatic, government-wide spending cuts that must be achieved by the end of the federal budget year on Sept. 30.

Flight delays piled up across the country Sunday and Monday as the FAA kept planes on the ground because there weren't enough controllers to monitor busy air corridors. Cascading delays held up flights at some of nation's busiest airports, including New York, Baltimore and Washington. Delta Air Lines canceled about 90 flights Monday because of worries about delays. Just about every passenger was rebooked on another Delta flight within a couple of hours. Air travel was smoother Tuesday.

The cuts were required under a law enacted two years ago as the government was approaching its debt limit. Democrats were in favor of raising the debt limit without strings attached so as not to provoke an economic crisis, but Republicans insisted on substantial cuts in exchange. The compromise was to require that every government "program, project and activity" ? with some exceptions, like Medicare ? be cut equally.

The FAA had reduced the work schedules of nearly all of its 47,000 employees by one day every two weeks, including 15,000 air traffic controllers, as well as thousands of air traffic supervisors, managers and technicians who keep airport towers and radar facility equipment working. That amounted to a 10 percent cut in hours and pay.

Republicans accused the Obama administration of forcing the furloughs to raise public pressure on Congress to roll back the budget cuts. Critics of the FAA insist the agency could have reduce its budget in other ways that would not have inconvenience travelers including diverting money from other accounts, such as those devoted to research, commercial space transportation and modernization of the air-traffic control computers.

President Barack Obama chided lawmakers Saturday over their fix for widespread flight delays, deeming it an irresponsible way to govern, dubbing it a "Band-Aid" and a quick fix, rather than a lasting solution to the spending cuts known as the sequester.

"Republicans claimed victory when the sequester first took effect, and now they've decided it was a bad idea all along," Obama said, singling out the GOP even though the bill passed with overwhelming Democratic support in both chambers.

He scolded lawmakers for helping the Federal Aviation Administration while doing nothing to replace other cuts that he said harm federal employees, unemployed workers and preschoolers in Head Start.
