Just another partner search

Hello Loves. ^__^ Once again im looking to add a few new roleplay partners. I currently have a lot of extra time on my hands for reasons i would rather not go into, so.. i thought i would see if anyone is interested in a few one on ones? I tend to favor darker themed roleplays, though thats not all i'll do. I am also usually more prone to fantasy, but i've been known to do a realistic if the story is good. Post length tends to vary depending on whats going on, but i can usually get up to 4 decent paragraphs. I can play either gender. I favor the female role but am not limited to it. I can aslo double if need be. Pairing wise i have no limits. I have done the standard male/female, male/male and female/female a number of times each.

A few things i would be interested in
~Angel/demon
~boarding school -School in general is an interesting place to have a setting
~urban fantasy
~dark fantasy
~Romance (as part of the plot, not the whole thing)
~Vampire/hunter
~Werewolf/Vampire
~Old friends (ask for an explanation if interested)
~Prince or princess/servant
~Medieval
~Horror

~And many, many more ^__^

If anyone has any interest in tossing some ideas around leave a comment or send a message ^__^

Great apes make sophisticated decisions

Chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas and bonobos make more sophisticated decisions than was previously thought. Great apes weigh their chances of success, based on what they know and the likelihood to succeed when guessing, according to a study of MPI researcher Daniel Haun, published on December 21 in the online journal PLoS ONE. The findings may provide insight into human decision-making as well.

The authors of the study, led by Daniel Haun of the Max Planck Institutes for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen) and Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig), investigated the behaviour of all four non-human great ape species. The apes were presented with two banana pieces: a smaller one, which was always reliably in the same place, and a larger one, which was hidden under one of multiple cups, and therefore the riskier choice.

The researchers found that the apes' choices were regulated by their uncertainty and the probability of success for the risky choice, suggesting sophisticated decision-making. Apes chose the small piece more often when they where uncertain where the large piece was hidden. The lower their chances to guess correctly, the more often they chose the small piece.

Risky choices

The researchers also found that the apes went for the larger piece and risked getting nothing at all no less than 50% of the time. This risky decision-making increased to nearly 100% when the size difference between the two banana pieces was largest. While all four species demonstrated sophisticated decision making strategies, chimpanzees and orangutans were overall more likely to make risky choices relative to gorillas and bonobos. The precise reason for this discrepancy remains unknown.

Haun concludes: "Our study adds to the growing evidence that the mental life of the other great apes is much more sophisticated than is often assumed."

Ovarian cancer study proves drug delays disease progression, may improve survival

Ovarian cancer study proves drug delays disease progression, may improve survival

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Treating ovarian cancer with the drug bevacizumab ("Avastin") delays the disease and may also improve survival, show the results of an international clinical trial co-led by Drs. Amit Oza of the Princess Margaret Cancer Program, University Health Network and Timothy Perren, St James's Institute of Oncology, Leeds, UK.

The findings, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, report that the drug halted the cancer's return for two months overall. However, for women with the highest risk disease, the delay was five to six months and in this group, the findings also indicate a strong trend to improved overall survival, which is being analysed until 2013.

"This is the first new drug in ovarian cancer in 15 years to improve outcome and I believe it should be considered as a potential new standard of care," says Dr. Oza, a medical oncologist who leads the Cancer Clinical Research Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital. He is also co-director of the hospital's Bras Family Drug Development Program and Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

The seven-year study began in 2004 and enrolled 1,528 women with ovarian cancer at 263 centres, including 20 in Canada. Avastin was added to chemotherapy treatment and given intravenously every three weeks for 12 months.

The drug blocks growth factors that promote new blood vessels formation in tumours, thereby "starving" the cancer. It is not a cure, explains Dr. Oza, but has a proven track record in delaying disease progression in other types of cancer including colorectal, lung, breast, kidney and brain.

"We now know that using Avastin in ovarian cancer for even this short time improves outcomes," says Dr. Oza. "The next step is to determine if giving it for a longer period would be of even greater benefit."

Similar findings from a U.S. study are also reported in this issue of the journal. Dr. Oza says the major difference between the two studies is that the women in the American study were given twice as much Avastin. "So the question now is would half the dose for double the duration improve outcomes even more? This is an area to investigate further."

US 'deeply concerned' after Egypt raids NGO offices

The US said it was 'deeply concerned' after a series of raids by Egypt's ruling military today on nongovernment organizations promoting democracy and human rights, some US-funded.?

A?series of armed sweeps of democracy, justice, and human rights organizations in Egypt today drew denunciations from the US and from a senior researcher for Human Rights Watch who called the actions "unprecedented."

The US Embassy in Cairo wrote on its Twitter feed that it was "deeply concerned that Egyptian judicial and police officials raided the offices of a number of NGOs today." When an Egyptian on Twitter directed a comment to the Embassy that "SCAF receives $1.3 billion in annual military aid from [the] US but yet NGOs who 'might' be receiving foreign aid [are] stormed?" the embassy responded "good point."

SCAF is the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the committee of senior military officers who have run the country since Hosni Mubarak was pushed from power in February by mass protests against his rule. Among the groups targeted today were Freedom House, the International Republican Institute, and the National Democratic Institute, democracy promotion organizations that received a substantial portion of their funding from the US government's National Endowment for Democracy.

The raids add to growing unease among Egyptian democracy activists about SCAF's true intentions. Though the council has insisted that it supports transition to democracy, with parliamentary elections scheduled to wrap up in the next few weeks and presidential elections promised by July, it has also shown a heavy hand at times.

Democracy activists have been given jail terms by military courts, protests against military rule have been violently disbursed, and public warnings that "foreign hands" are stirring up trouble have been frequently issued by representatives of the junta.?Activists have frequently pointed out that while both military and civilian politicians frequently warn of not allowing "foreign interference" in internal Egyptian affairs, the military and government are themselves heavily reliant on foreign aid, most notably from the US.?

At least 10 NGOs were raided by Egyptian security forces this afternoon according to Heba Morayef, a Cairo-based Human Rights Watch researcher.

Cancer-Causing Fungi Found in Food

Chinese city finds cancer-causing fungi in food Reuters

10:34 a.m. EST, December 30, 2011

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese food safety regulators in the southern city of Shenzhen have found carcinogenic mildew in peanuts and cooking oil, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

The cancer-causing substance, called aflatoxin, triggered public concern this week after milk giant Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd said last weekend its Sichuan plant had destroyed products found by a government quality watchdog to contain it.

Aflatoxin occurs naturally in the environment and is produced by certain common types of fungi. It can cause severe liver damage, including liver cancer.

Xinhua reported that the Shenzhen market supervision bureau had said it found up to 4.3 times of the permitted level of aflatoxin in peanuts sold in two supermarkets and one frozen food store, and up to four times the allowed level of aflatoxin in cooking oil in four restaurants.

Fungi and the aflatoxin they produce can infect crops before harvest or during harvesting and storage. The tainted crops then enter the foodchain either directly, or indirectly via animal feed.

On Thursday, food safety officials recalled cooking oil produced by three companies in the southern Guangdong province because they may contain excessive levels of aflatoxin.

These incidents are the latest in a string of safety scandals to hit China's food industry in recent years.

In 2008, at least six children died and nearly 300,000 became ill in China from drinking powdered milk laced with melamine, an industrial chemical added to low-quality or diluted milk to give misleadingly high protein readings.

Sinead O'Connor 'handed crack on wedding night and Barry Herridge was frightened'

By Alanah Eriksen

Last updated at 8:34 AM on 30th December 2011

Sinead O'Connor has spoken about being handed Class A drugs after taking her new drug-counsellor husband on a marijuana hunt on their wedding night.

The Irish singer says her fourth marriage was in trouble from the start and the wild search on the mean streets of Las Vegas led to their eventual split 16 days later.

The 45-year-old insists she still loves Barry Herridge, 38, but says she ended their relationship on Christmas Eve because of the pain he was in.

Stressed: Sinead O'Connor, pictured outside her home this week, has spoken about her post-wedding search for drugs

The couple met online four months ago after Barry responded to a plea by unlucky-in-love Sinead asking for potential suitors to come forward.

They married on December 8 in a quickie wedding at the famous Little White Chapel in the Nevada state.

?

Sinead told The Sun that she took him on a search for cannabis afterwards.

'We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous.

'I wasn't scared ? but he's a drugs counsellor. What was I thinking?

'Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened ? that kind of messed everything up a bit really.'

Radiant: Sinead glowed with happiness as she married drugs counsellor Barry Herridge in Las Vegas on December 8

The purchase or possession of cannabis is an offence in Nevada, subject to a fine of up to $600 for a first offence.

But far more serious might be the repercussions for the Glenageary-born singer?s music career.

For the U.S. authorities routinely refuse travel and work visas to those who have committed ?crimes of moral turpitude?.

These crimes include ?a violation (or conspiracy or attempt to violate) any law or regulations of a State, the United States or a foreign country relating to a controlled substance'.

In 1992, Miss O?Connor appeared to advocate marijuana smoking and in a 1999 Irish Times interview, she admitted to smoking ?weed?, saying: ?I do not take drugs ? I smoke a little weed now and again, which I told the social workers and they laughed.

?I do not take drink or any other drugs. Everybody knows that.?

The mother-of-four said the marriage was also sabotaged early on by the 'interference of certain people'.

'It felt like I was living in a coffin. It was going to be a coffin for both of us and I saw him crushed.

'The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man.'

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer says she will never marry again and may not even date anyone.

Sinead this week emerged from her home looking tired, stressed and grey-haired.

Gone was the pretty pink frock from her wedding - and instead she came to the door in nothing but a towel before hurriedly changing into a T-shirt and jeans.

'I love him very much': The singer made the announcement on her website, revealing the couple only lived together for 7 days

'I love him very much': The singer made the announcement on her website, revealing the couple only lived together for 7 days

The singer announced on Boxing Day that her 'dream' fourth marriage had ended after just 16 days.

She said on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her husband tried to ?kybosh? it.

Sin?ad posted a statement on her website stating that she had decided to end the marriage after just seven days of domesticity.

She wrote: ?There was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me. These were people who had never met me but had formed opinions of me based on what they read about ?Sin?ad O?Connor? in the media, etc?.

But she admitted that her husband had also been very upset by a ?wild ride? they took to try and buy marijuana on their wedding night, as she doesn?t drink alcohol.?

Legally binding: A spokesperson for the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding

Legally binding: A spokesperson for the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding

But despite its apparent spontaneity, the couple will now have to wait four years to legally end their brief union.

The Little White Wedding chapel confirmed to the Mail that the marriage certificate the couple signed was a legally binding contract.

?Basically, once the couple have consummated the marriage it is not easy to have it annulled.?

The wedding to Mr Herridge was to be the fairy-tale ending to the singer?s search for love, which she launched last summer across Twitter and on The Late Late Show, even attending the annual matchmaking festival in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare.

Then the singer shocked the nation by writing a series of candid blogs on her website, detailing what she was looking for in a man.

Loves: O'Connor married friend musician Steve Cooney last year

Another love: O'Connor married musician Steve Cooney last year

Exes: Sinea's ex-husbands Nick Sommerlad and John Reynolds

Exes: Sinead's first husband was to music producer John Reynolds

She wrote in September that she was in ?desperate need of a very sweet, sex-starved man,? but specified that he ?must be no younger than 44, must not be named Brian or Nigel, must be blind enough to think I?m gorgeous, has to be employed and he has to like his mother.?

Inundated with thousands of replies, Miss O?Connor selected just one man to go on a date with ? her future husband.

Another big love: Although Sinead and Frank Bonadio were only together for just over a year, they had a child together, son Yeshua

Split: She had a child with Frank Bonadio

?Barry sent me this wonderful email, which just took my heart away. It had to be him,? said the mother of four.

Originally from Donaghmede, north Dublin, but now living in nearby Raheny, Mr Herridge revealed the contents of the email that kickstarted the relationship.

?I was getting off a train at Connolly Station one morning when I saw this woman acting strangely on the platform. At first I didn?t know what she was doing and then I realised she was playing hopscotch. It wasn?t Sin?ad but a businesswoman in a suit and in her 30s, just having a bit of fun.?

He added: ?I wondered why more women that age weren?t doing the same thing. And it struck me that this was exactly what Sin?ad was doing with her search for love, having fun, and I told Sin?ad about this woman in my first email.?

The story struck a chord with Miss O?Connor, who invited the paediatric psychotherapist out on a date last August. A coffee shop on Dublin?s South William Street was the setting for their first face-to-face meeting and it was love at first sight.

On December 7, the couple announced their intention to marry, using the Today FM Breakfast Show to get the happy news out to the nation.

The singer kept the happy news quiet when she appeared on the Ian Dempsey programme the previous day, telling him she had no gossip to share. But Barry rang the show on Wednesday morning to let the cat out of the bag

Consumer confidence index surges in December (AP)

NEW YORK ? Americans are gaining faith that the economy is on the upswing.

An improving job outlook helped the Consumer Confidence Index soar to the highest level since April and near a post-recession peak, according to a monthly survey by The Conference Board.

The second straight monthly surge coincided with a decent holiday shopping season for retailers, though stores had to heavily discount to attract shoppers.

The rise in confidence jibes with a better outlook for the overall economy. An Associated Press poll of three dozen private, corporate and academic economists projects U.S. economic growth will speed up in 2012, if it isn't derailed by upheavals in Europe.

But confidence is still far below where it is in a healthy economy. And Americans' mood could sour again if the debt crisis in Europe deepens and spreads to the U.S. Shoppers still face big obstacles ? higher costs on household basics and a still-slumping housing market.

"This is encouraging. It's good to be talking about improvement," said Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo. "But there is still a lot of room for trouble."

The Conference Board, a private research group, said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index rose almost 10 points to 64.5 in December, up from a revised 55.2 in November. Analysts had expected 59. The level is close to the post-recession high of 72, reached in February.

The December surge builds on a big increase in November, when the index rose almost 15 points from October. That month's reading was the lowest since March 2009, the depths of the recession.

One component of the index that measures how shoppers feel now about the economy rose to 46.7 from 38.3 in November. The other barometer, which measures how shoppers feel about the next six months, rose to 76.4 from 66.4.

In particular, shoppers' assessment of the job market improved, according to preliminary results of the survey conducted Dec. 1-14. Those anticipating more jobs in the months ahead increased to 13.3 percent from 12.4 percent while those anticipating fewer jobs declined to 20.2 percent from 23.8 percent.

Economists watch confidence numbers closely because consumer spending ? including items like health care ? accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Americans have more reason to be optimistic. The economy has produced at least 100,000 new jobs for five months in a row, the longest such streak since 2006. The number of people applying for unemployment benefits has dropped to the lowest level since April 2008.

According to the AP poll of economists, conducted Dec. 14-20, the U.S. economy is expected to grow 2.4 percent next year. In 2011, it likely grew less than 2 percent.

"We're starting to make some progress," said Kathy St. Louis of Atlanta, who was picking up lunch Tuesday at CNN Center. "It could always be better, but we're trying to move in the right direction." She said she spent $700 on holiday presents, up from the $300 she spent last year, even though not much changed with her paralegal job.

Ahlum Beruk, 22, a Greenville, Miss., resident who was visiting Atlanta, was a student last year and worried about finding a job. This year she works for a hotel and spent about $100 on Christmas presents. She spent nothing on gifts last year.

"I do feel better because I have a job now, and I didn't before," she added.

Shoppers still face many hurdles. In fact, while the job market is steadily improving, the unemployment rate is still high at 8.6 percent. And housing remains wobbly. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index of home prices, also released Tuesday, dropped in October in 19 of the 20 cities it tracks. It was a second straight declining month, further evidence of a bumpy housing recovery

Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, noted renewed fears about a second recession hurt confidence last summer.

"While consumers are ending the year in a somewhat more upbeat mood, it is too soon to tell if this is a rebound from earlier declines or a sustainable shift in attitudes," Franco said. "Have we rebounded from a summer lull or are we turning the corner?"

In fact, even with the increase in confidence, shoppers have been focused on deals this holiday season. Shoppers, enticed by expanded hours and bargains, packed stores for the start of the holiday season, resulting in discount-fueled record spending. But then they retreated for a few weeks to wait for better deals.

Based on the stronger-than expected start and rising optimism that more spending was to come in the finale, the National Retail Federation earlier this month upgraded its holiday sales growth forecast to 3.8 percent, from the original forecast of 2.8 percent made in September. More data will be released this week that will help quantify the last-minute sales surge.

Still unclear is how the discounting will affect stores' profit margins. It might not be all bad for retailers: Roxanne Meyer, a retail analyst at UBS Investment Research, says post-Christmas markdowns were not as deep as expected, with less than half of retailers she surveyed increasing promotions from last year.

_______

AP Retail Writer Mae Anderson in Atlanta contributed to this report.

Once stranded off Europe, turtle released in Fla. (AP)

SARASOTA, Fla. ? Johnny the sea turtle has traveled more than many people do. But the journey that took him from the Gulf of Mexico to Europe and back isn't over yet.

The 68-pound, rare Kemp's ridley turtle was released into the Gulf on Tuesday morning near Sarasota. About 300 people stood on the beach to bid Johnny farewell as he swam off into the surf off Lido Key.

The endangered creature was found stranded on a beach in The Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from its usual sea habitat. Marine experts think the turtle ? which normally swims, feeds and breeds in and around the Gulf of Mexico ? got swept up in the powerful Gulf Stream and carried off to Europe.

"It just had the misfortune to get in the current and go with the flow," said Tony Tucker, the manager of Mote Marine Laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program in Sarasota.

But experts didn't give up on the turtle, which was found cold and disoriented in 2008.

Rescuers in The Netherlands named the creature Johnny ? though it's sex is unclear ? and made sure the turtle received good care at the Rotterdam Zoo. Then Johnny was sent to an aquarium in Portugal, Oceanario de Lisboa, and afterward for rehabilitation at Zoomarine, another site in Portugal.

The turtle traveled so much that the Portuguese experts named it "Johnny Vasco da Gama," after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who opened a sea route from Europe to India centuries ago.

About three years later, Johnny was flown to Miami and then trucked to Sarasota by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. There, Johnny was outfitted with a satellite tracking system that will allow scientists to monitor its travels to come.

Kemp's ridley sea turtles are among the smallest sea turtles, only reaching 100 pounds. They nest on the beaches in Mexico and spend most of their lives along the Gulf coasts of Mexico and the United States, although they can also be found on the Atlantic coast of the U.S.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, it is the most endangered sea turtle.

On Tuesday, Mote staffers pulled up to the beach in a truck and lifted the turtle, with its greyish blue head, out of the pickup bed. The turtle was gently, and briefly, placed on a platform so onlookers and the media could take photos. Then, two workers carried the turtle across the sand and to the water's edge.

They rested the turtle on the sand and it waved its flippers. Mote experts carried it into the surf and it swam away quickly to the applause of onlookers.

"Every time you return an animal to where it belongs, that's a good thing," said Tucker, who was helped carry the turtle to the water.

The sea turtle conservation program at Mote has treated more than 294 sick and injured turtles since 1995.

He said that turtles use the Earth's magnetic field to navigate, so Johnny will probably know exactly what to do and where to go once he orients himself.

Tucker said that Johnny could face some obstacles, including a patch of red tide algae along Florida's southwest coast about two hours from where it was released. Marine biologists also are concerned that Johnny could swim off the coast of Louisiana near the site of a massive offshore oil spill in 2010.

Regardless of where Johnny swims, experts will track the location because of the antenna attached to its shell that will send a signal to a satellite each time the turtle surfaces for air. Tucker said the public can also track Johnny on a map or get daily emails of his whereabouts. Tucker said tracking Johnny will provide experts a rare look at how rehabilitated turtles reorient to the wild.

"Turtles are swimming at about half a mile an hour, so I don't expect it to get very far today," said Tucker. "The whole process of reorienting to the Gulf of Mexico will be part of the feeling it out as it goes, so I don't expect that we're going to see it hightail it for Mexico immediately. I imagine that we'll probably find that it meanders around a little bit."

Android and iOS share a merry little Christmas: seven million total device activations

Google's SVP of Mobile just provided us with another glimpse inside the horse's mouth, claiming that Android scored 3.7 million new device activations over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. To put that in context, Flurry reported that total Android and iOS activations on Christmas Day alone totaled 6.8 million. If we can accept a very high margin of error, and if we assume that the vast majority of Rubin's activations were on the 25th, then we might extrapolate a roughly even split between the two rival platforms. Considering where Android was just a couple of Christmas's ago, it's no wonder that Mr Rubin is in the tweeting mood.

BCS Championship Game tickets available in drawing to aid tornado relief efforts

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama --?The state's on-going?tornado relief effort is being benefitted through the generosity of a former Alabama football player and a drawing for a pair of BCS National Championship Game tickets.

A former Tide player, who wants to remain anonymous, has donated his two tickets to the Jan. 9 Alabama-LSU rematch in New Orleans?to the Dade Organization Acting in Disaster (DOAD). Those tickets will be raffled off with all proceeds going to the relief program.

The raffle will be conducted on the web site of the Chattanooga Times Free Press www.timesfreepress.com/doadtickets. A donation of $20 makes a person eligible to win the tickets. The contest will begin Dec. 23 and run through Jan. 4. A winner will be selected at random on Jan. 5. The championship game will be played Jan. 9 in the Superdome in New Orleans.

DOAD represents relief efforts from the series of April tornadoes in Dade County, GA, but also in the northeastern Alabama counties of Jackson and DeKalb. Dade borders those counties and DOAD is extending assistance in the sparsely populated areas in the extreme northwest.

Two persons died and almost 300 homes were totally or partially destroyed from the tornadoes in Dade. Just across the state line, on Sand Mountain, 12 individuals lost their lives and dozens of other homes were demolished or damaged.

"Our primary focus just after the emergency need was to get the community up and going again," said Joseph Chambers, chairman of DOAD. "Once we got out of that, we were looking at helping individuals. We are helping to rebuild and we are continuing to help with repairs."

To date, DOAD is working on rebuilding five homes and continuing to repair others. It has purchased five trailers for families, and has done myriad types of repair work on single family homes and trailers, in addition to purchasing furniture and household goods.

"Right now, we still need $100,000-$150,000 to finish off this disaster," Mr. Chambers said.

Although the organization is based in Trenton, GA., the county seat of Dade County, much work is being done in Alabama.

"State lines and county lines become blurred in a disaster," said Howard Doyle, a case manager for DOAD. "They are our neighbors. We want to help them as well."

According to Mr. Chambers, foundations have been established for three homes on Sand Mountain. He believes the relief effort won't be completed until late in 2012.

For more information, contact DOAD at 706-657-3233 ext 364.

Japan's industrial output down, unemployment flat (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's industrial output dropped last month ? with production, shipments and inventory figures all decreasing ? but government forecasters had manufacturing and production looking for a rebound this month and next, officials said Wednesday.

The unemployment rate adjusted for seasonal differences was unchanged in November from the previous month, at 4.5 percent, the government also announced.

Industrial output dropped a seasonally adjusted 2.6 percent in November, according to the Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry. It was the first decline in two months.

It said industries contributing most to the decrease were transport equipment, information and communication electronics equipment and iron and steel. Large and small passenger cars and cellphones were among the commodities adding to the decline.

The ministry described the data as "flat," and said manufacturing and production were expected to increase 4.8 percent in December and to increase 3.4 percent in January

In other economic data announced Wednesday, the government said the core Consumer Price Index fell 0.2 percent in November from year-earlier figures, its second consecutive monthly fall. The index, which does not include fresh foods, was 99.6 against the 2010 base of 100.

Core CPI for Tokyo in December ? considered an indicator of future trends for the entire country ? fell 0.3 percent.

In recent years, Japan has wrestled with deflation, or falling prices, which can drag on economic growth.

The ratio of job offers to job seekers was 0.69 in November, an improvement from 0.67 the previous month.

Figures released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs said there were 2.80 million people unemployed in Japan in November.

Harassment of young girl deepens Israel?s debate on ultra-Orthodox Jews

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped up pledges to curb Jewish zealotry in Israel on Sunday after an 8-year-old girl complained of being menaced by ultra-Orthodox men who deemed her dress immodest.

While his conservative government insists such incidents are fringe phenomena in the mostly secular country, Mr. Netanyahu?s repeated announcements on the matter reflected concern about widening religious and political schisms.

More related to this story

?In a Western, liberal democracy, the public realm is open and safe for all, men and women both, and neither harassment nor discrimination have any place there,? the prime minister told his cabinet in broadcast remarks.

He said he had ordered law enforcement authorities to crack down on ?whoever spits, whoever lifts a hand (in violence), whoever harasses? and to remove street signs segregating men from women in some ultra-Orthodox districts.

The statement appeared to have been prompted by an expose aired on Israel?s top-rated weekend television news about spiralling intra-Jewish friction in Beit Shemesh, a town of about 87,000 people near Jerusalem.

Eight-year-old Naama Margolese told Channel Two TV she was terrified of walking to her moderate Orthodox school because of passersby who wanted her ?to dress like a Haredi? ? the Hebrew term for the ascetic, black-coated Jews who are in ?awe? of God.

?I?m afraid I might get hurt or something,? the girl said.

Margolese?s mother Hadassa, an American immigrant who wore a headscarf and skirt in deference to religious Jewish tradition, said the sidewalk abuse could include spitting, curses like ?whores? and ?bastards? and calls to ?clear out of here.?

Channel Two showed a Beit Shemesh street sign ordering women to keep to one side, away from a synagogue. A few ultra-Orthodox men who were interviewed disavowed religiously motivated aggression toward women. Others sought to justify it. Some shunned the TV crew, shouting at the journalists to leave.

The report resonated in Israel given recent media focus on the impact of ultra-Orthodox gender segregation on public transport and in the conscript military, where some religious troops boycott women instructors and entertainers.

The ultra-Orthodox make up only about 10 per cent of Israel?s population of 7.7 million. But their high birthrates and bloc voting patterns have helped them secure welfare benefits and wider influence. One of Mr. Netanyahu?s biggest partners in the coalition government, Shas, is a party run by rabbis.

According to Channel Two, the Beit Shemesh story has generated momentum for a demonstration against ultra-Orthodox violence in the town, scheduled for Tuesday.

?Beit Shemesh shocked Netanyahu not because of new facts but because of old facts that were recounted by a lovely little blond-haired girl with blue eyes,? said Nahum Barnea, senior commentator for the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

?But their thuggery, just like the thuggery in the settlement outposts, paralyses other people in their midst who are less extreme, who warn the establishment, from the prime minister down. The tail wags the dog.?

Stricken Russian boat sailing from Antarctic ice (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A Russian fishing boat that was stuck for 12 days while in danger of sinking in the frigid waters off Antarctica began a trek through 100 miles (160 kilometers) of sea ice to open water on Wednesday, New Zealand officials said.

The Sparta hit underwater ice Dec. 16 that tore a 1-foot (30-centimeter) hole in its hull. Heavy ice in the Ross Sea prevented help from reaching the stricken vessel for 10 days, forcing the Sparta's crew to pump out near-frozen sea water to keep the ship afloat while awaiting rescue. At one point, some of the crew boarded life rafts. The crew has 15 Russians, 16 Indonesians and one Ukrainian.

The South Korean icebreaker Araon finally arrived on Monday, and repairs to the hole were completed by Wednesday morning, New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Center said. The Araon then began escorting the Sparta through the ice and toward the open ocean.

Both ships are expected to clear the ice pack within 12 hours of moving, rescue center spokesman Chris Henshaw said.

"The inside (of the hull hole) has been all fixed up ? they used a cement box to fill it in," Henshaw told New Zealand's National Radio. A cement box provides a temporary fix to the torn steel plating to make the vessel seaworthy.

The crew had not been able to weld a steel plate over the hole because of safety concerns, he said.

The Araon, a polar research ship, will guide the Sparta to ice-free open ocean about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, where it will be joined by its sister ship for the 2,200-mile (3,700 kilometer) journey to the New Zealand port of Lyttelton. It will dry dock there for permanent repairs, Henshaw said.

So a Russian, an American, and a Dutchman blast off in a rocket...

An international trio of astronauts blasted off in a Russian Soyuz rocket Wednesday, and are en route to the International Space Station.

A trio of astronauts blasted off aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket on Wednesday on a mission to bring the International Space Station back up to full manpower after an August cargo launch accident disrupted flights.

The rocket carrying Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronaut Don Pettit and the European Space Agency's Andre Kuipers lifted off at 8:16 a.m. EST under freezing conditions at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, a NASA Television broadcast showed.

The all-veteran crew was scheduled to reach the orbital outpost at 10:22 a.m. EST on Friday. They will join station commander Dan Burbank and two Russian cosmonauts who arrived last month, bringing the complex back to its full live-aboard staff of six.

Soyuz flights to the station were disrupted by the failure of a Russian Progress cargo ship in August. The Progress' upper-stage engine is virtually identical to the one used to fly crews to the station, prompting a suspension of flights until the cause of the accident could be found and fixed.

Russian engineers traced the problem to contamination in a fuel line, which prevented the rocket engine from firing. The capsule broke apart as it fell back through the atmosphere, scattering debris over parts of Siberia.

After detailed inspections and new procedures to tighten quality control,?Russia?resumed station cargo flights on October 30 and crew transports on November 14.

In addition to ramping up science experiments aboard the station, the astronauts and cosmonauts are expected to oversee the start of commercial cargo resupply flights.

Space Exploration Technologies, one of two firms hired by NASA to deliver cargo to the station following the space shuttles' retirement this summer, plans a trial run in February.

"I view these vehicles like wagon trains supplying some government-run fort out West," Pettit said in a prelaunch interview. "We have commercial entities that are lining up to take supplies to and from space station."

NASA eventually wants to buy rides to fly astronauts to the station commercially as well and is contributing to four firm's efforts. The U.S. space agency has $406 million to spend on space taxi development for the fiscal year that began on October 1 and plans to issue its next solicitation in mid-February, program managers said on Tuesday at an industry briefing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

With the space shuttles' retirement, NASA is dependent on Russia to fly crews to the station, a service that currently costs the United States about $350 million a year.

The station, a $100 billion project of the United States, Russia, Europe,?Japan?and Canada, is a multi-purpose research laboratory for biology, physics, astronomy and other studies that orbits about 240 miles above Earth.
