In an Aug. 30 "Slatest" post, Josh Voorhees incorrectly identified the Tampa Bay Times as the Tribune.

In an Aug. 28 ?Brow Beat? post, David Wanczyk originally said that Ryan Hall was listening to Ian McKellen read Robert Fagles' translation of The Odyssey. Hall actually seems to be listening to a non-McKellen voice actor read Samuel Butler's translation.

In the Aug. 28 ?XX Factor,? Kerry Howley described Cathy McMorris Rodgers as the highest-ranking Republican in the House?she is the highest ranking Republican woman in the House. Howley also misstated the amount of money Sher Valenzuela?s company has accepted in government loans and contracts?it was $17 million, not $17 billion.

In an Aug. 27 ?Explainer,? Katy Waldman wrote that the Republican Party held its first convention in 1832. It was the National Republican Party; the modern Republican Party grew out of the Whig party in 1854.

In an Aug. 27 "Future Tense" post, Will Oremus stated that the chances of suffering a direct hit from a hurricane if you live outside the National Hurricane Center's "cone of uncertainty" are roughly one in three. In fact, one in three represents merely the chances of the hurricane's eye passing outside of the cone at all. The chances of any single location outside the cone suffering a direct hit depend on the location but are presumably far lower than one in three.

In an Aug. 24 ?Culturebox,? Michelle Dean referred to Fareed Zakaria as a Newsweek columnist. He writes for Time.

In an Aug. 23 ?Science,? Jesse Bering wrote that the author of an anti-Semitic children?s book from 1938 Germany was executed as a war criminal. It was the book?s publisher who was executed.

Germany to host 200 refugees from Libya

Germany will host around 200 refugees who fled the fighting in Libya last spring and have been staying ever since in a camp in Tunisia, the German embassy in Tunis said on Friday.

After 18 months in Choucha camp on the Tunisia-Libya border "195 refugees will be able to leave this Monday, September 3, for Germany to start a new life," it said in a joint statement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Six other refugees will join the others in Germany later as they were "forced to postpone their trip for medical reasons," said a source.

The refugees are from Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia and were in Libya when the conflict that led to the fall of Moamer Kadhafi's regime erupted in early 2011.

The camp in Tunisia currently houses some 2,200 refugees.

Finding A Good Deal On A Hotel

Planning a budget-friendly vacation takes time and research. Once you have decided where you want to go on your next holiday, there are some essential plans that have to be confirmed. Finding an airfare that suits your budget is the first step, and then you want to know where you will stay. There are many ways to accomplish these tasks, but the place to start is an online discount travel site. On these sites, you will find the lowest airfares, and be able to compare and choose among many travel providers. On most travel sites, you can book your hotel at the same time, at substantially reduced costs for the package. Discount travel sites often purchase a block of rooms at a discount, and pass the savings on to you.

Choosing the right hotel takes some research, though. You must determine what you want from this holiday, whether it is a hiking and climbing trip, or a romantic getaway. Which hotel you choose will be determined by your destination, and your needs while away. If you are on a combined business/pleasure trip, you will want a hotel with business amenities like wi-fi in the room, perhaps a business centre where you have access to fax machines and desktop computers, and a room large enough to spread out your work. On the other hand, if you are on a city trip, visiting shops and museums and restaurants, you may not need many amenities at the hotel besides hot water in the shower, and a comfortable bed.

Many travel sites have links to traveler reviews of the hotels they offer. These can be very helpful, having real feedback from ordinary people. You may find that the hotel you are considering is noisy, or that the plumbing is unreliable. If you are traveling with a family, it is good to hear from other families what their experience was to give you a better idea if it the right hotel for you.

Some of the best deals for hotels are all-inclusive vacations. These are holidays that include airfare, hotel accommodation, meals, drinks, entertainment and activities. Once you have paid, that is the last time you have to reach for your wallet. Most all-inclusive vacations are in sun destinations; Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America. Many are large resorts with several buildings and pools for guests. The staff at these resorts are well-trained to serve guests from all over the world, and the variety of activities and amenities available vary widely, but often include water sports, Spanish language lessons, dance lessons, tennis, bicycles and indoor games.

When looking for a hotel or an all-inclusive vacation, be clear about what kind of holiday you want. All-inclusives are tailored to many demographics such as single, families, couples, gay/lesbian, and single parents. The prices range widely, with the best deals available during shoulder season, the months before and after high-season. Many vacation packagers will offer deep discounts for early booking for high season. Now is a good time to book for next January for early-bird discounts which will let you save a lot of money.

Lisa Stienway writes for Flightnetwork.com. Flightnetwork.com offers all inclusive vacations and tickets for various airlines. Also deals in cruises, vacation packages, car rentals and hotels at affordable prices.

Payleven, The Rocket-Fueled Square-Clone, Opens In UK, Netherlands, Brazil; Confirms Double-Digit Round

screen-shot-2012-06-22-at-10-57-41Rocket Internet, the incubator/investment vehicle from the Samwer brothers, is known to move fast: Today, news comes that Payleven, its recently outed Square-clone, has opened its doors in the UK, Netherlands, Poland and Brazil, in addition to its existing operation in native Germany. That looks like the beginnings of a pretty ambitious international expansion plan and will certainly keep European rivals?iZettle?and SumUp on their toes, along with the UK's?mPowa,?given the Samwers' reputation for aggressive execution. Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey's Square is yet to launch this side of the pond. As?noted last month, Payleven reportedly raised??tens of millions? of euros in funding from New Enterprise Associates, Holtzbrinck Ventures and the Russian VC ru-net. Today, the company finally confirms that is indeed the case, describing the size of the round only as in the "double digit million euro" region.

Laurie Guy: Fidelity in marriage an issue for gay men | McBlog

NZ Herald 29 Aug 2012
All you need is love. That is the theme song of pro-same-sex marriage proponents. It is the slogan of Louisa Wall, author of the same-sex marriage bill. If two gay people love each other and want to ?marry?, why don?t we allow this? But is love enough?

In answering that question, we need to be aware of two other questions: what is marriage? And why is the state involved? The latter question is crucial, because the core issue is one of affirmation, not rights ? rights can be dealt with by specific legislation without amending the Marriage Act and upsetting lots of people.

Apart from conveying rights, marriage provides affirmation that the state/society encourages this relationship as a good thing. A crucial question is whether gay relationships are such a good thing as to be endorsed by society as ?marriage?.

We should look at the issue of social endorsement through four lenses: love, commitment, health, and society?s interests.

Let?s begin with love. What is ?love?? The word covers a raft of sometimes contrary meanings, from sexual desire centred on ?my? self-gratification, to heroic self-giving for another. Both heterosexual and same-sex unions may well pass (or fail) this test. The love issue does not debar same-sex marriages.

However, love alone is not enough. It can be fleeting and transient. If marriage is to be serious and not trivial, it needs longevity, buttressed by commitment and faithfulness.

What of gay commitment and faithfulness? Long-term lesbian relationships on average may well be as committed and faithful as that of an average married heterosexual couple. The problem is the gay men.

Some male gay couples are as committed and faithful as typical married heterosexuals. Survey evidence, however, indicates that these are very much a minority.

Significant data on male homosexual behaviour is available through New Zealand Medical Journal articles and the New Zealand Aids Foundation website. The Aids Foundation and the Aids Epidemiology Group at the University of Otago have conducted biennial surveys, the Auckland Gay Periodic Sex Surveys, for the past decade.

The 2010 results covered the sexual behaviour of 1527 gay men in 2008. On the commitment side, the survey indicates that the most common number of sexual partners for gay men over the previous six months was two to five. Just 38.8 per cent of those surveyed had a partner of more than six months? standing (i.e. relationships with some level of commitment).

However, 52 per cent of these men had also had sex in that period (six months) with other partners. So despite the rhetoric of love and commitment, most male gay couples are not in a genuinely monogamous relationship. Should the meaning of ?marriage? be broadened under such circumstances?

There is also the health issue. Male-to-male coupling typically has far greater health risks (because of high levels of anal sex). Both with casual and with ?boyfriend? sex the percentage engaging in anal sex is over 80 per cent. Anal sex is never fully safe. Although condoms reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV/Aids) by around 85-90 per cent, risk remains (because of user misuse or product failure).

Risk is far greater without condom protection. Although 98 per cent of those surveyed knew that anal sex without a condom is very high risk for HIV transmission, 73 per cent did not use a condom at least once in the past six months (the figure for casual sex was 31 per cent).

The result is high levels of sexually transmitted infections amongst gay men. Over 60 per cent of new infectious syphilis cases are gay men. This category also has high rates of gonorrhoea and hepatitis. And 76 per cent of all new HIV diagnoses in 2000-2009 were gay men.

Can we affirm male gay relationships to the level of ?marriage?, given the data on faithfulness and health? One can argue change on the basis of ?me?, ?my rights? and ?choice?. But the debate is also about the good of society.

What society needs are stable, faithful, healthy relationships. Stable marriage has gravely weakened in the last generation. There is deep hurt and scarring of many, especially children, as a consequence.

In a direct sense gay ?marriage? will not make this worse. Indirectly, however, it will, because it makes marriage, which for many is becoming vague and fuzzy, vaguer and fuzzier still. It is social engineering ? with its negative aspects ignored.

We need to have a deep and wide debate, looking at all factors. The same-sex marriage debate is currently far too simplistic. The draft bill is a daft bill.

Laurie Guy is author of Worlds in Collision: The Gay Debate in New Zealand 1960-1986 (Victoria University Press, 2002). He lectures in religious history.

DALLAS Aug. 28, 2012 Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly, says a new study that includes a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Taking aspirin is associated with a lower risk of death from prostate cancer, especially in men with high risk disease, according to a multicenter study published in today's issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Kevin Choe, assistant professor of radiation oncology at UT Southwestern, is first author of the paper.

Preclinical studies have shown that aspirin and other anticoagulation medications may inhibit cancer growth and metastasis, but clinical data have been limited previously. The study looked at almost 6,000 men in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) database who had prostate cancer treated with surgery or radiotherapy.

About 2,200 of the men involved 37 percent were receiving anticoagulants (warfarin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and/or aspirin). The risk of death from prostate cancer was compared between those taking anticoagulants and those who were not.

The findings demonstrated that 10-year mortality from prostate cancer was significantly lower in the group taking anticoagulants, compared to the non-anticoagulant group 3 percent versus 8 percent, respectively. The risks of cancer recurrence and bone metastasis also were significantly lower. Further analysis suggested that this benefit was primarily derived from taking aspirin, as opposed to other types of anticoagulants.

The suggestion that aspirin, a frequently prescribed and relatively well-tolerated medication, may improve outcomes in prostate cancer is of particular interest, Dr. Choe said, since prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men and the second-leading cancer killer in the U.S.

"The results from this study suggest that aspirin prevents the growth of tumor cells in prostate cancer, especially in high-risk prostate cancer, for which we do not have a very good treatment currently," Dr. Choe said. "But we need to better understand the optimal use of aspirin before routinely recommending it to all prostate cancer patients."

###

Other scientists involved with the study include Janet Cowan, Drs. June Chan, and Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco; Dr. Anthony D'Amico of Harvard University; and senior author Dr. Stanley Liauw of the University of Chicago.

Other scientists involved with the study include Janet Cowan, Drs. June Chan, and Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco; Dr. Anthony D'Amico of Harvard University; and senior author Dr. Stanley Liauw of the University of Chicago.

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 8 troops

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Taliban militants attacked a Pakistani army post near the Afghan border before dawn Wednesday, killing eight soldiers, a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, said a military official. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the eight soldiers killed, six others were wounded in the attack near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The attack started around midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The attack followed the start of a new army operation to rout militants from the area, said the official. During the operation over the last two days, soldiers killed 18 militants and destroyed seven of their hideouts. Another 21 militants were wounded, according to the official.

The official initially said nine soldiers were killed but later lowered the toll to eight.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the post. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.

Verdict due on Mumbai gunman's appeal

India's Supreme Court was due Wednesday to deliver its verdict on an appeal against the death sentence handed down to the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Mohammed Kasab, one of 10 gunmen who laid siege to Mumbai in attacks that lasted nearly three days and killed 166 people, launched his appeal claiming he had not been given a fair trial.

He was found guilty of charges including waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts, and was given the death penalty in May 2010.

Two Supreme Court judges in New Delhi have heard the appeal of Pakistan-born Kasab, who is currently held in a maximum-security prison in Mumbai.

If he loses his Supreme Court petition, he can lodge a final appeal for clemency with the president.

During the November 2008 attacks, heavily armed Islamist gunmen stormed targets in Mumbai including luxury hotels, a Jewish centre, a hospital and a bustling train station.

India blames the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit for training, equipping and financing the gunmen with support from "elements" in the Pakistan military.

Kasab initially pleaded not guilty but later confessed, admitting he was one of the gunmen sent by the LeT.

"I was denied a fair trial," Kasab said in a statement when his appeal hearing began in January. "I may be guilty of killing people and carrying out a terrorist act but I am not guilty of waging war against the state."

In 2009, Pakistan charged seven alleged perpetrators behind the attacks but insists it needs more evidence.

The Mumbai attacks horrified India as each development unfolded live on television, and there have been widespread public calls for Kasab's execution.

At the trial, the prosecution produced fingerprint, DNA, eyewitness and TV footage evidence showing Kasab opening fire and throwing grenades at Mumbai's main railway station in the bloodiest episode of the attacks.

Most death sentences in India are commuted to life imprisonment, but convicts can sit on death row for years awaiting a final decision.

Pakistan has admitted that the attacks were planned partly on its soil, but flatly denies any official involvement.

Why is it tough to track spending?

It is difficult for people to track their spending and whether it?s wise or not simply because they cannot decifer between requirements and wants. This is one on the biggest hindrance towards getting into practice good private finance budgeting.

You may need items in life including foodstuff, water, shelter and clothing. Needs are those stuff we cannot live without. Needs are also those who living without would case difficulties and distress. Knowing between needs and wants is essential since your perception will determine whether you spend your money on this or not.

Advertising is so powerful these days that you might think of luxuriuos goods as ?needs? when in fact you dont actually need them. These deceiving commercials upon TV greatly influence the purchasing and personal financial budgeting behavior. It is your job to manufacture a wise decision whether every new product is something you really need in addition to cannot live without. Some things may help to make life easier and equal to the quality of life you are living, but it is more imperative that you know whether you can certainly truly afford them or maybe not.

After learning between desires and wants put whatever you have learned into train. Here is a simple spending system that will greatly help your personalized finance budgeting:

- Create a personal finance budget which you can use
- Save 10% of one?s income
- Always know just how much you have left to shell out
- Instantly know the impact of any spending decision

In 2005 the You. S. was implemented with completely new bankruptcy laws that handed congress. Before that time, filing for chapter 7 bankruptcies was an easy way out of financial responsibilities.

Many people spent years being careless using credit and debts because it can be fixed with a fast filing for bankruptcy.

Now that the regulation has changed, there are more rules for filing a section 7. Before the 2005 modification, filers could choose which code they wished to file under. Income did not issue.

One of the main changes is that now those with a higher income will have to file under chapter 13 and therefore pay off some of the incurred debt. The law also charged new restrictions on chapter 7 lawyers. It may be tougher now to get a lawyer who will represent you in the bankruptcy case.

In addition to the modern income restrictions, there is also necessary counseling that debtors must complete before and after filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Pre-filing, individuals must complete credit counseling and post-filing, they must complete economic budgeting. These should have also been implemented years before. They are designed to hold people aware of their own spending and keep them on track.

Romanian businessman acquitted of corruption

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? A Romanian court has acquitted a businessman and 11 other people of defrauding the state of $85 million (?68 million) by money laundering and illegally manipulating markets to financially benefit a major oil company.

The trial against Dinu Patriciu ? general manager of Rompetrol SA and a onetime rival of President Traian Basescu ? began in 2006.

Magistrates on Tuesday dismissed all the charges but did not present their arguments for the ruling.

Prosecutors had charged that from September 1999 to November 2001, Patriciu siphoned off money using a network of insiders and a former government minister, and transferred it to his company funds. They demanded a 20-year sentence for Patriciu.

The ruling can be appealed, but there was no immediate comment from prosecutors or the defendants.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office says he has dismissed the country's top intelligence official, a move that comes just as he prepares to name new defense and interior ministers.

The changes in three top jobs in Afghanistan's security apparatus come at a crucial time. The U.S.-led coalition is working closely with Afghan officials to train national security forces to fight Taliban insurgents after most international troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

A statement from Karzai's office Wednesday said Rahtamullah Nabil would leave his post as National Directorate of Security director. It said the decision came because Nabil had served out his two-year term. It did not name a replacement.

Earlier Wednesday, lawmaker Abdul Qadir Qalatwal said Karzai will nominate new Defense and Interior ministers "today or tomorrow."

CHAMPAIGN, lll. The rhythm of life is driven by the cycles of day and night, and most organisms carry in their cells a common, (roughly) 24-hour beat. In animals, this rhythm emerges from a tiny brain structure called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus. Take it out of the brain and keep it alive in a lab dish and this "brain clock" will keep on ticking, ramping up or gearing down production of certain proteins at specific times of the day, day after day.

A new study reveals that the brain clock itself is driven, in part, by metabolism, the production and flow of chemical energy in cells. The researchers focused primarily on a phenomenon known as "redox" in tissues of the SCN from the brains of rats and mice.

Redox represents the energy changes of cellular metabolism (usually through the transfer of electrons). When a molecule gains one or more electrons, scientists call it a reduction; when it loses electrons, they say it is oxidized. These redox reactions, the researchers found, oscillate on a 24-hour cycle in the brain clock, and literally open and close channels of communication in brain cells.

The researchers report their findings in the journal Science, which also wrote a Perspective on the research.

"The language of the brain is electrical; it determines what kind of signals one part of the brain sends to the other cells in its tissue, as well as the other parts of the brain nearby," said University of Illinois cell and developmental biology professor Martha Gillette, who led the study. "The fundamental discovery here is that there is an intrinsic oscillation in metabolism in the clock region of the brain that takes place without external intervention. And this change in metabolism determines the excitable state of that part of the brain."

SIDEBAR: Want to Know More?

The new findings alter basic assumptions about how the brain works, Gillette said.

"Basically, the idea has always been that metabolism is serving brain function. What we're showing is metabolism is part of brain function," she said. "Our study implies that changes in cellular metabolic state could be a cause, rather than a result, of neuronal activity."

New School Year, New Lunches: Fruits ... - Food and Drink Digital

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?As students head back to the classroom, school cafeterias are debuting more nutritious choices for kids, including whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and school flavored milk that is lower in sugar and calories than ever before. In fact, this year marks the first full school year of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new school lunch regulations aimed at improving the health and nutrition of our nation's kids.??

The nation's milk processors have been hard at work over the past several years to lower the calories and sugar in school flavored milk, giving kids the taste they love while still maintaining all of its essential nutrients. The average calories in school flavored milk has declined by more than 21% over the past five years and sugars have been cut dramatically by 40%.?On average, school flavored milk now has 132 calories per serving. 1

When Milk Declines; Nutrition Declines
At the same time schools are revamping their menus to boost nutrition, one of the most nutrient-rich beverages on the tray is facing a decline. School milk consumption declined for the third consecutive year, decreasing by more than 1% in just the last year alone, according to a recent national survey. 1 Flavored milk is the most popular choice in school lunch rooms and research suggests students drink less milk when it is not offered ? contributing to the detrimental decline in milk intake. 2

"It's important that kids learn how to make food choices in the lunch room to develop skills that last a lifetime," said Carolyn O'Neil, MS, RD. "By providing a variety of nutritious and delicious foods ? like fat free chocolate milk -- we're teaching kids good decision-making and ensuring that lunch doesn't end up in the trash. Taking away nutritious choices is really just counterproductive."

In fact, research suggests "choice" helps boost kids' overall intake of nutritious foods, and flavored milk is a nutrient-rich choice.3 All milk is packed with 9 essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium ? all "nutrients of concern" according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. When kids skip milk at lunch, it's nearly impossible to meet the needs for these vital nutrients during the rest of their day.

"Simply put, when schools cut flavored milk, they also cut critical nutrients from students' diets," said O'Neil. "Flavored milk is really a win-win on the lunch tray. It's packed with 9 essential nutrients, but even better, kids love it."

Moms Believe in Nutritious Choices
For many moms, flavored milk on the menu represents an important choice for their kids. Four out of five moms (79%) believe kids need healthy choices at school including chocolate milk, according to a nationally representative survey, while three in four (77%) say they think their children should be able to choose which beverage to drink at school.4 Moms know they're teaching their kids good food and nutrition lessons by offering choices.

Research suggests flavored milk drinkers have more nutritious diets and do not consume more added sugars than non-milk drinkers, and studies show flavored milk contributes just 3% of added sugars to kids' diets compared to sodas and fruit drinks, which account for close to half of the added sugar and deliver much less, if any, nutritional value.5,6

The Right Start to the School Day
Even before kids reach the lunch line, starting the day with a good breakfast including nutrient-rich milk can help moms set their kids up for success. A good breakfast, with milk, gets kids off to the right start and has the fuel kids need to succeed.

Whether it's to be a rock star or rocket scientist, milk can help bring children closer to their dream.
