Potential new HIV vaccine/therapy target

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? After being infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in a laboratory study, rhesus macaques that had more of a certain type of immune cell in their gut than others had much lower levels of the virus in their blood, and for six months after infection were better able to control the virus.

SIV is a retrovirus that infects primates. Strains of SIV that crossed over to humans resulted in the evolution of HIV. In rhesus macaques, SIV causes simian AIDS (though in many primates it is harmless) and studying the virus in these animals offers crucial insights into how HIV acts in humans, the researchers said.

The discovery by researchers at UCSF may shed light on the mystery of why some people infected with HIV are better able to control the virus, live longer and have fewer associated health problems than others who have been infected as long, they said. It also provides a potential new target for developing therapies or vaccines.

The cells that have the protective effect, called Th17 (T helper 17) cells, are a subset of the type of disease-fighting immune cell targeted and killed by HIV and found in the gut of both primates and humans.

A prior study from the same UCSF team found that SIV infection causes a normally protective immune response to infection to go awry, leading to reduction in the protective activity in the gut of these Th17 cells and weakening of mucosal defenses against bacteria. Interestingly, in that study, Th17 cells were not affected by SIV in another primate, African green monkeys, in which SIV infection is harmless and does not cause disease.

"Animals with more of these Th17 cells were better able to control SIV and this was due in part to macaques developing a more effective immune response by producing more SIV-specific CD4-positive T-cells to fight the infection. Our next step is to see if we can augment the Th17 effect, perhaps by looking at interleukin 17 (IL-17), the cytokine released by these cells, and testing to see if it has an effect," said the study's primary investigator, Dennis Hartigan-O'Connor, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine.

"Further, if a treatment can be developed to increase Th17 cells in the gut, it may allow for a more effective immune response after exposure to an HIV vaccine or the virus itself," he added.

The findings are being published in the May 30, 2012 issue of Science Translational Medicine.

In the new study, the investigators first determined the levels of Th17 cells in the gut of sixteen rhesus macaques and then infected them with SIV. They found that the animals with more Th17 cells to begin with were better able to control the virus. They then gave animals drugs that deplete Th17 cells and found that reducing the number of Th17 cells made controlling SIV more difficult for those animals.

"We found great variation in the levels of Th17 cells, with as much as a five-fold difference in numbers between animals. e are not sure why this is the case. It could be genetically determined or perhaps due to a previous exposure to a type of bacteria that stimulates production of Th17 cells," said Hartigan-O'Connor.

This study is part of a series of investigations undertaken by researchers at the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine into how SIV, and by extension HIV, interacts with the immune system in the gut. The previous study was focused on chronic infection and persistent inflammation in the gut.

"The earlier study addressed the cause and consequence of inflammation after infection. We found that inflammation induces an enzyme that knocks out Th17 cells, which normally help to keep the gut intact, and that disease progression was faster. Reciprocally, we have now found that animals do better if they have many Th17 cells at the outset of infection. We are gradually increasing our understanding of this important aspect of the immune system and we are working to translate this understanding into an approach that benefits patients," said study senior author, Joseph M. McCune, MD, PhD, chief of the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine.

Study co-investigators include Bittoo Kanwar from UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine and Kristina Abel and Koen K. A. Van Rompay from the University of California, Davis.

Funding for this research was provided by the National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the California National Primate Research Center, the National Center for Research Resources and the Harvey V. Berneking Living Trust.

Knife-wielding robots to debone chickens at superhuman speed

19 hrs.

Robots are more than capable of painting cars, firing rivets and doing other mechanical tasks, but it seems that cutting up a chicken properly presents quite a challenge. The Georgia Tech Research Institute hopes to change all that with a chicken-deboning robot that slices meat from the bone faster and more efficiently than any human can.

The problem is that every chicken is different, and while experts can tell at a glance where to cut, when and which way to turn the blade, and how much force?to exert, robots aren't quite as sensitive. Gary McMurray is the head of GTRI's Food Processing Technology Division, and presides over the Intelligent Cutting and Deboning System project. It's essentially a robotic hand and knife that can see in 3-D and sense when and how to cut up each individual chicken.

One robot arm holds the bird while a computer vision system contemplates its contours. After determining the depths and locations of joints, bones, and so on, it goes to work. The knife itself only makes simple cutting movements, but the arm holding the chicken can move freely, and they work together to debone with what McMurray hopes will be unprecedented precision and speed, as he explains in GTRI's press release:

Our statistics research shows that our external measurements correlate very well to the internal structure of the birds, and therefore will transition to ideal cutting paths.?In our prototype device, everything is registered to calibrated reference frames, allowing us to handle all cut geometries and to precisely align the bird and the cutting robot.

It's no niche business, either: The poultry industry comprises some $20 billion of Georgia's agriculture business, and tiny variations in efficiency are worth millions to processing plants. And robots could do it more safely as well as more quickly; with bone-sensing algorithms and millimeter precision, bone chips and other mistakes could be a thing of the past.

Nina Kotick: Lionel Richie On Risk-Taking, Passion And Topping The Charts At Age 62

Lionel Richie has another hit on his hands. Renowned for his storied career in soul and R&B, Richie recently released an ode to his southern roots "Tuskegee" -- named for his hometown in Alabama. The album features 13 of Richie's timeless hits, performed this time as duets with today's country stars.

Richie asked each of his collaborators to create new arrangements without making the song unrecognizable. The result: a new twist on old favorites that has rocketed to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200. Richie joins Ray Charles as the only other artist in history to have a No. 1 album on both the Billboard Country Albums and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.

Richie's career began over 40 years ago as the front man for the Commodores, the popular 1970s Motown band. With hits like "Brick House," "Three Times a Lady," "Sail On" and "Still," Richie catapulted to stardom, with three platinum albums, five Grammy awards and an Academy Award in 1984 for Best Original Song. The Huffington Post caught up with Richie to find out what it's like to be back at the top of the charts at age 62.

With so many accolades, I imagine some artists would kick back at this point in their careers. Why try again with "Tuskegee"?

A lot of people ask me that and my answer is "this is all I know how to do." If you ask me what my hobby was when growing up, I would tell you "writing songs." And probably the best part of what I do is taking it one step further, reinventing every day. For example, when I wrote "Three Times A Lady," they said, "Oh my god, you can never write anything better than that." So I wrote "All Night Long" -- something totally different. And they said the same thing. So that's what I do, even after all these years. I try to find another avenue. I'm from Alabama and it was time for me to go back and discover my country roots.

Of your many duet partners on "Tuskegee" -- from Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett to Kenny Chesney and Shania Twain -- who surprised you the most and why?

Normally, when one does an album and brings in other artists, most of the arrangements are still geared to the original artist. For instance, in a Sinatra album, all of the arrangements are geared to Sinatra so that the songs still feel very Frank. I decided instead to customize each song to the style of my partner so that the songs, while never entirely losing their original feel to the listener, could really jive with my collaborator. I let them record it the way they wanted and put myself into their tracks, their arrangements. I don't know if I'll ever have the courage to do that again, but it sure was exciting.

So, given that, I would say Jennifer Nettles really blew me away with her version of "Hello." When she said, "I'm going to sing 'Hello' the way I would sing 'Hello'," I said, "Give it your best shot." And when I heard it, I said "oh my god -- what the heck are you doing?" Because she has a voice that is just unbelievable. When she came out, all I could think of was, "how do I get back on my own record?" So she surprised me the most with her vocal power. (See the slideshow below for a performance by Richie and Nettles.)

What ignites your creativity?

Passion first. Whether it's falling in love, falling out of love, being lonely for love, or searching for love, there's a passion to all of it. So what I seek out in my life is real true emotions. Authenticity. And when I sit down to write, I tap into that. You know how it feels when you're listening to a great sermon and you feel "ahhhh, that hits a chord, he's speaking to me"? That's where I go to write. I look at touching others. And then try to say it in the very simplest way, distill it down to the basics.

Your songs are to you, I imagine, your babies. What is one of your very favorites and why?

Interestingly, I actually had to live life for my own songs to come full circle and touch me in the deepest ways. In the past, sometimes, when I would sing All Night Long at a concert, I might see someone crying. And that didn't make sense because that's supposed to be a happy song. Or when I would sing "Still," I might see someone laughing. And that didn't make sense because that's supposed to be a sad song.

But now, having been through the experiences of my lifetime, I hear these songs, and even the words I wrote myself, very differently. I wrote "Still," for instance, about another person's breakup, not my own. I now feel it differently, having experienced two divorces. But if I had to choose, it would be "Easy Like Sunday Morning," because it was from a part of my life when I worked so hard and everyone tried to make me into something and someone I didn't want to be. I just wanted to be myself. And so that song will always resonate for me.

And "Hello" will also probably be one of my favorites forever. I wasn't the jock in school growing up -- too slow for track, too small for football, too short for basketball -- so I wasn't the most popular kid on the block. "Hello" will always remind me of those times when I saw a guy walking into a party with a beautiful girl and I dreamed that she was looking for me. And what I learned was that there was an entire world of people who felt invisible as I did and dreamed like me.

Looking back, what was it, or who was it, that first led you to believe that you could be a successful artist and musician? What gave you the courage to go for a dream?

I give a great deal of credit to the Commodores. I grew up in a small community, a place where everyone seemed to know me. They knew that I couldn't play football; that I played tennis, which, in Alabama during the civil rights movement, didn't earn me Mr. Popularity. That I was a smart kid. And that community impression became my impression of myself.

But when I went to college, I met a guy from Florida, Thomas McClary, who didn't grow up with me. He said, "I heard you brought your horn with you. You want to join a band?" And he introduced me to the drummer, who was from Florida. And then to the keyboard player, who was from Mississippi. They didn't seem to care that I wasn't the basketball player, the football player, the lover. It was so freeing to see myself through their eyes and not buy into the limitations I knew from my own small town.

These guys gave me a chance because they said, "Hey Rich, can you sing?" And even though I was just a shower singer, it was a little secret of mine, I had the chance to go for it. Then I met Suzanne De Passe, who discovered the Commodores for the Jackson 5 Tour. She said she liked the lead singer and I thought, "who, me?" And then we joined Motown. Finally, there was Dick Clark. He told me I was going to host the American Music Awards. When I said, "I have no experience," he said, "I know. You school boys are all the same -- you think you need a diploma before you think you know what you can do. You can host the show because I say you can host the show." Sometimes you find that there are people who can see your potential before you can see it. Or believe in you before you do.

Did you deem it risky to sing? Would you call yourself a risk-taker?

Joining the Commodores didn't seem risky to me at the time. I believed in the dream. Of course, I was young and naive. It sure was risky to my mom and dad! "Hey, I'm quitting school to join a group called the Commodores, we're the black Beatles and we're going to take over the world." They didn't love it. And when they told me it was risky, I said that if it all goes wrong, I can still be a lawyer or a doctor by age 27. That this was my time to go for it. That's when they said, "OK, take your shot." Becoming a songwriter, that was risky. Because they were my words, my voice. I wasn't just singing someone else's story. I went for it because I knew if I made it, it would be on my own songs.

You now have a daughter, Nicole, in the public eye. Having lived in it for so long, what advice do you find yourself giving her?

Well, her generation is experiencing something that my generation never had to worry about. In mine, we had privacy. I could go to London, Rome, Amsterdam -- do something completely crazy, out of my mind -- and return home as little Richie. No one would know about it. Even in celebrity we had privacy. Now, everything one does is captured for eternity. I want to see Nicole's generation run for president. I don't know how it will be possible when every high school tweet, every frat picture, every move is captured on someone's phone.

So I tell her, always remember one thing -- whatever you do now is forever. Our parents could tell us stories and we believed what they told us. It won't be so for this generation. Their kids will be able to see and know things that they never would have wanted to share. We really don't even know what the consequences of all this exposure will be to future generations.

At this stage of life, what's one rule you feel you can break with impunity?

To a certain degree, I can be brutally honest. My grandmother used to always say, "if you are afraid of the truth, don't ask children or old people." Children don't know better and old people don't care. Tact is good but at a certain point, a person knows what he likes and doesn't like, what he is willing to do and not do, and honesty becomes the way to go. I can now change my mind without feeling guilty. I love that I can simply say no and not have to explain why.

What's one thing you wish you knew when you you were growing up?

I wish I would have understood what marriage was all about. We fall into love so easily because it is so innocent and so magical but the reality of it is so different. Marriage comes with a great deal of responsibility. A lot of compromise and work. If I knew then what I know now, as the expressions goes, I would've figured out a lot of things and that would have changed my whole life's course. But even though I wish I knew better, I wouldn't really change anything.

What do you want people to know about you that they might not already know?

I'm a jokester. I really love humor. My father used to always say to me, "You can lose your job, your house, your money. But if you lose your mind, then your life is over. And the only way to keep your mind, is to have sense of humor -- about yourself and about life." He had a very serious life and yet he had a great sense of humor. So I live my life by those words. I try to find the adults who still have the children in them -- and hang around with them. It's much more fun.

Is there any stage, literally or metaphorically, on which you still yearn to play?

Yes. The one role I want to play is Dad. I have great stories, great lessons and I want to share them with my kids, and with my grandkids. Of course, it's their lives and they will all do what they want to do anyway. But I want to pay attention to their growing up. Because the best thing that happened to me when I was growing up was that somebody was paying attention to me. If I could win on the fatherhood stage and as a great friend to those in my life, then I will be really happy.

Will you ever retire?

I don't know how! That's the good news for me. I keep waking up every morning with another idea. This is the love affair i'm having. Someone asked me when i'm going to retire and I said "from what?" You only retire from a job. And this has never been a job. It's my life.

Love/Hate Relationships | Cultivate Coaching & Consulting

I have several; one in particular with Wal-Mart. Being a middle-aged southern woman raised by depression-era parents, shopping there is practically in my DNA. I do like to save money. But the service is usually so awful, I want to scream. About five years ago, a bad experience with an employee forced me to boycott Wal-Mart for two years. I even wrote a letter to Bentonville and spoke to the district manager.

On the other hand, Wal-Mart provides great examples of organization behavior on such an incredible scale it can boggle the mind. Sam Walton?s?Made in America?combined with the CNBC documentary? The Age of Wal-Mart?illustrates most of the topics in an Intro to Org Behavior textbook.

You can find a news story about Wal-Mart nearly every day. Some are good and some are bad. It is fascinating. The alleged Mexican bribery scandal is one of the latest. Years ago Wal-Mart really botched their decisions about employee health care and the message they shared about it. But, demanding reduced packaging from their vendors has had a huge environmental impact. And I?ll never forget the post-Katrina Fortune Magazine cover: Government Broke Down. Business Stepped Up. How Wal-Mart, FedEx and Home Depot got the job done after Katrina (October 3, 2005).

A few weeks back, on the same day the news reported Wal-Mart going into crisis mode because of the bribery scandal, I saw a story about Wal-Mart giving $2 billion to end hunger in America. I?m sure that was orchestrated but again, really big, amazing examples of organization behavior.

I don?t think Wal-Mart is completely terrible or entirely wonderful but I do believe it is important to look at all sides of an issue or an entity. The world is too complex nowadays to see things as flat or either black/white or purely good/bad.

International vs Global | CLU Business

Approximately 2500 years ago, Confucius supposedly said, ?When words loose their meaning, people loose their freedom?. What stuck from my early training as a sinologist tells me that this quote has often been misinterpreted and misused. A less common interpretation is that it is important that people who are engaged in discourse must first agree on the terminology before they can have a meaningful exchange of ideas. This is why one of the first things I discuss with students in my International Business course is the sometimes confusing terminology in the field ? international, multinational, transnational, global. Depending on the management silo we find ourselves in ? strategy, marketing, human resources, etc. ? we may use these words differently. Now, I?m not going to go into this discussion here today, but I wanted to share a different, but related observation. Recently I discovered the Google Ngram Viewer (http://books.google.com/ngrams) that provided me with a more historical perspective on the discussion over international business terminology. Ngram mines digital content that Google has stored in GoogleBooks for user-defined key words. Looking for the occurrence of the key words ?international business? and ?global business? between 1978 and 2008, we can see an interesting development: while the use of ?international business? is relatively stable over time (with maybe even a slight decline from 2000 on), we can see dramatic increases in the use of ?global business? at least for the 20 years following the mid 1980s.

Looking for an explanation, I turned to the world trade data as provided by the World Trade Organization. I expected to see a dramatic increase in world trade about the same time the use of the term ?global business? took off, maybe with some time lag of 3 to 5 years. However, it looks like the most dramatic increases in world (?global?) trade happened only in the late 1990s and not in the 1980s.

I haven?t yet had a chance to look into FDI data (particularly because clean, comparable global FDI data is hard to come by), so therefore, I don?t have a better explanation yet than to just ascribe the heightened popularity of ?global business? to a certain trend among authors and publishers. Which remains yet to be proven, of course. Contributions welcome!

Jerusalem, May 30, 2012 The tomato genome sequence both the domesticated type and its wild ancestor, Solanum pimpinellifolium -- has been sequenced for the first time by a large international team of scientists, including a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The achievement an important tool for further development of better tomato production -- by the 300-plus-memberTomato Genome Consortium (TGC) is reported on in the May 31 issue of the journal Nature.

The consortium includes Prof. Dani Zamir of the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Hebrew University. Other scientists in the project are from Argentina, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

When Columbus brought tomato seed from America to the old world some 500 years ago, he probably never imagined that it would be such a major contributor to human nutrition, health, culinary pleasure and international cooperation.

This latest quantum leap in knowledge of the tomato genetic code (35,000 genes) provides a means to match DNA sequences with specific traits that are important for human well being or taste, such as flavor, aroma, color and yield.

Beyond improvement of the tomato, the genome sequence also provides a framework for studying closely related plants, such as potato, pepper, petunia and even coffee. These species all have very similar sets of genes, yet they look very different.

How can a similar set of "genetic blueprints" empower diverse plants with different adaptations, characteristics and economic products? This challenging question is being explored by comparing biodiversity and traits of tomato and its relatives.

The Tomato Genome Consortium started its work in 2003, when scientists analyzed the DNA sequence of tomato using the most modern equipment available at the time. Fortunately, with the recent introduction of so-called "next generation sequencing" technologies, the speed of data output increased 500-fold and enabled the project to move on efficiently to its conclusion.

Casinos: Now In Your House | Scholarspride.com

Gambling and casinos have had an intimate relationship since the modern age. Gambling has always been there since the history of mankind but initially it was the market place or the local taverns where this kind of activities was carried out along with other things. Dedicated gambling zones came much later only when people started portraying it as not only a way to make some money but as also a means of entertainment. The relationship between casinos and gambling has been around from the time when the people in this business added the entertainment aspect to the gambling joints too. They made it a conscious effort to turn the gambling idea from that of a money making tavern indulgence to one of the most glitzy and glamorous activities in which the rich and the famous of the world would be interested to be a part of. The fact that they have succeeded in doing so is evident from the fact that the casinos in the legendary Las Vegas area are now known all over the world and have achieved a level of popularity unseen with such gambling joints. There are people who travel across the globe to the area to be a part of this world.

?

With the advent of the last decade or so, a lot of changes have undergone in the world around us. There have been a lot of technological changes that has led to making this world a more comfortable place to live in for the humans. The amount of technology that has been put to use in the recent years is unseen in history and can only be compared to the Industrial Revolution. One of the better things that have been put to use is the computers and the internet which connects all computers from across the globe. This two has made it possible that a lot of things changes in our daily life and this include the way we entertain ourselves.

?

Gambling from the casinos suddenly shifted to online gambling and each day more and more people were attending these virtual casinos on the internet and the business that these casinos made had easily gone past the traditional land based ones. The casino websites offer all kinds of games that are available in the land based casinos. And the best part about them is the ease of access which led to a lot of casual gamblers to log in and start playing. People loved the idea of being able to gamble and make money from the comfort of their couch. However, there are so many casinos on the internet that for any single casino online to make a difference in the market it must come up with a number of extra attractions.

?

The fact that a something different needs to be done has led to the formation of the concept of bonuses. There are casinos that provide the players with bonuses in cash and kind for clearing various levels of game play. Some even have tutorials in things like poker tricks to attract a large number of the clientele.

Coalition helps the Connecticut River become the first National Blueway

Between 40 and 50 local and state entities, both public and private, from four states will work together to preserve the 410-mile-long Connecticut River and its watershed.

By Cathryn J Prince,?Correspondent / May 29, 2012

The Connecticut River, as photographed from the French King Bridge in Gill, Mass. The river and its watershed have been named the first National Blueway, an effort to coordinate the work of nonprofit groups and governments to protect and wisely use the entire 410-mile river and its 7.2 million acre watershed.

Science writer Willy Ley once said: ?Ideas, like large rivers, never have just one source.? The same can be said for the Connecticut River Watershed, the first National Blueway in the United States, as designated May 24 by the US Interior Department.

It took the cooperation of between 40 and 50 local and state, public and private, organizations from four states to make the designation possible. While it doesn't mean more federal funding, it does mean better coordination between these groups to promote best practices, information sharing, and stewardship.

National Blueway is more than a label, says Andy Fisk, executive director of the Connecticut River Watershed Council.

?There are no turf wars here, but there are a lot of folks on the dance floor,? Mr. Fisk says. ?It?s important to recognize that this is a new way in how you get things done. It?s not one entity that will get things done, it?s diversity.?

The 7.2 million acre Connecticut River watershed runs through four New England states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

The idea for a National Blueways System comes from President Obama?s America?s Great Outdoors Initiative, which highlights grass-roots efforts in land and water conservation. National Blueways will coordinate federal, state, and local efforts by promoting best practices, sharing information and resources, and encouraging collaboration. Existing federal designations for rivers generally cover only a segment of a river and its corridor: A National Blueway will comprise the entire river, as well as its watershed.

Among the groups involved in the Connecticut River National Blueway are the Friends of the Silvio O. Conte Refuge, the Connecticut Watershed Council, the Connecticut River Museum, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.

At 410 miles long, the Connecticut River is New England?s largest and longest. Starting in New Hampshire, the silt-rich river empties into the Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, Conn.

It is also one of the only major rivers in the world that remains largely undeveloped, says Jerry Roberts, executive director of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Conn. A sand bar at the river?s mouth prevented a large seaport city from developing there.

?I?m looking out my window and see nothing but trees; that?s unusual for a river this size,? Mr. Roberts says.

The National Blueway designation will encourage people to regard the Connecticut River as a source of recreation, as well as something to be conserved, Roberts says. That?s no easy task considering the 7.2 million acre watershed reaches into four states.

Daily Online Alochona: Re: [mukto-mona] Madrasah Education

Of course he will ignore the chronology because it goes against his argument.

?

Here we have two people, Q. Rahman and K. Das, from two opposite poles, talking about something that, probably, others have?no interest at all. Q. Rahman is biased towards his religion, while K. Das is free from all religious obligations. How can you?convince a faith-based person coutering?his/her religious views? You can't. So far I have never seen any agreement between them. In fact, Q. Rahman thinks he is always right, and K. Das is always wrong in spite of all his references. Faith is not based on references. I think they have hit the wall at this point. I say - let's call it a day now. It's better not to prolong a discussion with an ideologue. Let's promote more discussions between two free-thinkers in stead; that's much more interesting. This is pretty boring ?.

Date: Monday, May 28, 2012, 8:49 PM ? You have ignored the chronology of Hebrew and Arabic languages.? Arabic was developed about three thousand years later than Hebrew mostly from the language of the Nestorians.? A few Hebrew words might have diffused into Arabic and that does not make them sister languages.? Consider the ethnicity of the monk Bahira alias Sergius the Nestorian and you would get the clue of simultaneous development of Islam and Arabic.

To get a proper 'education', you might need to unlearn most of what you learned before.? Arabic and Hebrew scripts , instead of being very similar as your observation is, have no similarity at all.

However if you have more credible source than "curator", feel free to share.

I am sharing an interesting article, which has few Hebrew alphabet. Since most Muslims do know Arabic alphabets, I need not to explain more to them. ....

The 5th chapter of Songs of Solomon is discussing someone. Jews will say it is discussing Solomon, while Christians will say it is discussing Jesus. Considering this is the Songs of Solomon, it would seem logical that it is discussing Solomon. The verses describing this mystery man have the narators speech conjuagted in the feminine (meaning it is a woman who is describing this man) so it is possible that it is one of Solomon's wives discussing her Husband (Solomon). However, if a Christian tries to assert that Jesus is being discussed, then they are insinuating that this is discussing a future prophet (a man who was not yet alive at that point), a prophesy.... If the 5th chapter of Songs of Solomon is looking into the future, then there is no doubt it is discussing Muhammad.

Throughout the chapter, someone is being discussed. Whomever it is, verse 15 says his "countenance (face) is as Lebanon", so this is an Arabic gentleman (or Arab looking), a Semitic man none the less. Verse 11 says "his head is as the most fine gold, his locks are wavy, and black as a raven". Verse 10 describes this man as being "radiant and ruddy" which means he was slightly light-skinned with a rosy color. This can be confirmed in the Sahih Bukhari Hadiths,?Volume 4, Book 56, Number 747, which says Muhammad was slightly light skinned, with a rosy color (and also has the same hair as is mentioned in verse 11). Also verse 14 describes this man as having a stomach like ivory. I take it this means the parts of his body that were usually covered by his garment from the sun, were very white (like ivory). This also can be atributed to Muhammad who although having a rosy, golden color, had white armpitts (Sahih Bukhari, Volume?2, Book 17, Number 141?says you could see the whites of his armpitt when he raised his hand). WHAT'S THE POINT?!?!

In conclusion, if Songs of Solomon chapter 5 is discussing a man to come after that time, it is without a doubt Muhammad, as it even mentions his name. Any Christian who believes Jesus is the Messiah, and believes that books were sent down by God after the TaNaKh (Jewish Bible), then surely they should take into account what they just read here, and consider the Qur'an before making a decision.

In an exhibition of scriptures in a University museum, the curator approached me failing to find any similarity between those two scriptures.? I suggested him to compare between the Arabic and Nestorian scriptures which he did and came back in minutes and said, "How come did you know it but I didn't"? My answer was rude as usual, "I read history on passion, you did it to make a living"? Like it or not religion is part of our culture and reality of our lives. So if we have enough "Educated" people among us with basic education of religious scripture, we can confront fanaticism and politicization of religion. As far as Islam is concern, it has structure to support politics but it does NOT support abusing religion to oppress innocent people. Because of a acute lack of basic understanding of Islam, the mainstream population hesitate to stand up against abusing of religion.

Madrassa is simply arabic word for school (As far as I understand it). You can call it "Patshala" if you please but quality of education should be our "Common concern". We are producing "One liner idiots" in most cases than people with fundamental understanding of religion.

1. It is a nice analogy. A book on the theory of probability mentions: If you put a monkey with a typewriter in front of it, by randomly typing, the monkey will one day recreate a sonnet of Shakespeare.

2. There was a time when individual Sanskrit?scholars used to run Sanskrit school as a profession. Curriculum included Indian philosophy including Charvak, grammar, literature, alankar, as well as orthodox scriptures. Traces of it may still exist but they do not produce any enlightened graduates. The recent graduates?even don't know how to write and read Sanskrit (Devnagori) scripts. They create orthodox priests at best. Indian philosophy and Sanskrit literature?are now taught in mainstream education system. The process of transition was obviously painful as it involved earnings of so many Sanskrit scholars who used to run the schools and their graduates. ?

Shah Deedar you are simplistic. These Madrasah graduates kept the Masjids running, the morals of the nation safe to the extent possible.Madrasas produced many political leaders like Akram Khan, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad., Mufti Mahmud, Moulana Atahar Ali in the past.

?

Many others who graduated from universities had initial education Madrasas.Even now about one third of the students get education in Dakhil Madrasas and then to the universities and they are better in education and conduct on balance in most cases.

The Madrasa stream is not harming national development. It is assisting by producing relatively more disciplined citizens.

What change did that education brought to Islamic countries? What invention did we make in last five hundred years? It is the modern knowledge cultivated by others serving us with all kinds of products and gizmos. We have become only buyers of manufactured goods and not creators of any damn thing except chanting God is great? And, how long can this go on?

This is Farida Majid at her best. She wants banning of all Madrasas. What an extreme statement. No comment is needed .

Her Islam which she parades sometimes is a queer thing. She understands Islam more than all Ulama and other Islamic scholars.

???????? Mr. Q Rahman gives us great wisdom from his 'religious' knowledge almost every time he posts. At some point one would thin that he is striving to be the greatest proselytizer of Islam.? My question is: Did he acquire all this vast knowledge from Madrassah education that he received in the past? Does Mr. Rahman himself,? or his sisters, brothers, cousins, friends and relatives send their children to Madrassahs for "authentic teachings of Islam"?

????? Unless the honest answer to the question is an unqualified YES Mr. Q Rahman is resorting to a false, malicious propaganda.

The fact on the ground level is that for the benefit of future generations of Muslims in the subcontinent

? ? ? ? ?

? Madrassahs should be BANNED from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh .

???????????? The traditional 'moktob' on Fridays that give 'ampara' lessons to little boys and girls at the local mosques in the village have been sufficient religious education for centuries.? In the cities parents can send their children to a weekend 'diniyat' school or something to pick up skills to read the Qur'an.? Parents can provide the needed religious education for their children (just as Mr. Rahman's parents did) without thousands and thousands and thousands of Madrassahs all over the country. The Muslims of Bangladesh are 'naturally' better quality Muslims than their berathars and sisters in the Kingdom of Jahiliya (otherwise known as Saudi Arabia ).

?????????????? There should be proper Religious Seminaries or especial Madrassahs where Imams and Khadems of mosques should receive their education.

??????????????

If you cannot see the politics behind the establishment of these educationally backward,? harmful and useless madrassahs then you ARE part of the propaganda. This has nothing to do with religion.

1. I will use the word "karma" as a religious or philosophical concept. The said word has very deep meanings.

2. Atheists (example, the Stalin era in the USSR ) may have agenda that can prompt them to kill and torture. I hope I have properly understood the meaning of the statement "Without communal agenda, atheists have no reason to abandon good karmas". Killings and torture by many "religious" dictators (example, Saddam) were or are not communally motivated. The holocausts that descended on the Jews (WW II) and Hindus (1971) were mostly communal in nature. In these two cases Hitler and Yahiya Khan were the villains.???

3. Hatred, discrimination, persecution, and killing are rooted in scriptures. It depends on the ruler how he interprets and implements it. AL (I prefer using AL to BAL--it is my problem, Mr. Rahaman, as the sense of sin is in my mind as I am prejudiced with the word BAL) gave us a great constitution although there was hardly any atheists in that party. Nazibullah and Mollah Omar had diametrically opposite agenda---the former one's being far more progressive and humanitarian than that of the latter's. Even a Taliban member who fought against Soviet ocuupation does not want Taliban to come back to power with the same agenda (closing girls' school for example).?

4. In my judgement (following Campbell ), both Islam and Hinduism originally were tribal in nature. Although the rituals have mostly remained triabal in nature (comparatively more dominating in Hinduism), both the religions are getting more and more universal. Given the multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multi-religious interactive and interdependent pluralistic societies, there is no way out. Isolated and closed societies are suicidal.

5. I do not believe in divine authorities. Every thing we see in scriptures are man made and were captured in the minds and hearts of the sages. Since they are man made and hence are bound to be time- and place-specific, only man?is legitimately entitled to challenge, modify, and update them. I always emphasize on the word "reinterpretation". I find the concept of "reincarnation" or "Avatar" interesting and instructive. If we are afraid to challenge, reinterpret, and update, we are doomed to live a life that is not "modern". The concept of "Avatar" guarantees the progress of the society as you do not get stuck to a particular Avatar and successive Avatrs are supposed to be more and more progressive.?

6. It does not matter when eating beef was forbidden, it is still a fact that to a practicing Hindu, the?cow is sacred and eating beef is against his religion. I have seen many Hindus not following this religious edict thanks to the freedom and rationality that they use to break the barrier to enjoy the cheap resources of the world a little bit more. Christians in general are more open in this matter.

7. I am aware that Mr. Rahman is not advocation for implementing Islamic rule in Bangladeh. But I wnt to emphasize that I am dead against the so called?"Islamic" rule in Bangladesh . I like 1972 constitution which has?already been raped?several times. I believe in the principle of "separation of the church from the state". Even I do not buy the idea that a state ( Bangladesh )?get pro-actively involved with an international organization (OIC) in declaring a city (Dhaka) as the capital (Dhaka)?of?a particular religious (Islamic) culture of a continent ( Asia ) for a particular year (1212). I am not aware of the terms of reference that Bangladesh will have to follow in case of capital of Islamic culture matter. In my opinion it should kept private and not a state affair. It should however be allright for the PM who happens to be the head of the government of a Muslim majority country to become the chief guest in any occasion related to this. But what can we do??Our dependence on the Islamic countries is still unlimited.

8. I fully agree that the improvemnt in quality of Islamic education will minimize the unhappy incidences like the one that has recently happened in?a madrasa. Even?a several decades ago Greek philosophies used to be taught in the madrasas of the subcontinent. I am not sure what?they have now in the curriculum. Our governments have neither?commitments nor resources to improve the system. They do not have the courage either to undertake such a program. ????????

the, ists, without communal agenda, have no reason to abandon good-karmas. Also, in my view, there is another class of people who serve God through good-deeds only, devoid of any religious ideology have no incentive to deviate from their good-karmas.

>>>>>>>>>> I am sure disorder in Bangladesh bothers you enough to write about it. It is the same for me. However some of your assumptions are probably based on observation not based on teachings of religion. Rightly you pointed out that without communal agenda, atheists have no reason to abandon good-karmas.

Guess you "Assumed" that religion dictates us to work against people of other faiths and no faiths. Judging by some so called religious parties I cannot blame you for such assumptions but that is NOT what Islam (As a Muslim I just want to talk about Islam in my post) is all about. Unlike most prominent faiths, Islam does have a Global outlook. The criminal laws are mostly same for people of all faiths. It does not favor Muslims over non-Muslims. In civil cases there are differences (Like laws of inheritance). The main problem is so called religious parties often focus on laws that favors their own ideologies (Frequently it has a magical relationship with going to power and grow influence in politics). Muslims cannot pick and chose laws of Allah (SWT). They should try their level best to practice as much as possible. Which includes respecting "Rights" (Haq) of other people. Islamic "Communal agendas" is mainly talking about one God (Not forcing others to this ideology but TALKING about), establish rights of all people, secure peace for the mass. As I mentioned in a recent post BAL was flexible about it's socialist agenda and it helped our country in a big way. We cannot be slaves of "Processes" only, we have to ensure we are following processes properly. For most Muslims in Bangladesh , we are largely "Tradition bound" not religion bound. Guess you can say the same about Hindus as well. As one Hindu scholar mentioned, there is nothing in scriptures of "Sanatana Dharma" prohibiting it's followers from consuming beef but it was a popular movement to "Respond" to Jainism. So Hindus adopted some of the theologies of Jains and stopped eating beef. I feel if we can improve the "Quality" of Islamic education in Bangladesh , it will make our country a better place to live. fortunately there are some bright people who are working hard in educating people about authentic teachings of Islam and hopefully positively impact our country.
