To the editor:
The creation of new jobs is essential to moving our economy forward and putting a paycheck into people?s pockets.
As a boat builder for more than 20 years, I was laid off in 1991 during a down economy when there was an excise tax on luxury items, soaring gas prices and the decimation of a prominent South Jersey industry ? gee, history does repeat itself.
I would like to see our freeholder board promote more solar and wind turbine projects. We have all read about the successful and money-saving wind turbines at the ACUA. I would love to see Atlantic County be the trailblazer for more of these projects.
Not only would these projects reduce our utility budget, they would reduce our environmental footprint. It was recently reported that Germany will start reducing its usage of nuclear power, realizing the importance of solar and wind power as the energy source of the future.
The skills of many of our unemployed fiberglass experts could be utilized to make molds and create parts used on wind turbines. These craft workers are already skilled in their trade, so this saves money on training, and it puts skilled labor back to work.
Our county legislators have to work with the business community to find innovative ways to create jobs for our unemployed residents. We have to utilize their skills and approach various avenues for ideas to grow our economy in Atlantic County. The advent of offshore wind turbines gives us the opportunity to develop new job openings that should stay in South Jersey and not be outsourced to other states. The time is now, and I hope we have the foresight to be the key to this project.
