'American Idol' Prediction Results: We Feel Haley Reinhart's Pain

The math just doesn't add up. Three contestants, two of them Southern church charmers who sing country music, and one Northerner who belts bluesy rock and has the underdog mantle.

But, somehow, Haley Reinhart stumbled one last time amid a record-setting 95 million vote landslide that pushed charming teens Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery into the finale spotlight.

It was the final smackdown after a series of harsh words from the judges, who struggled all season to find even one bad thing to say about a cast of often mediocre karaoke stars. It also proved once and for all that all our prognosticating is just so much whistling in the wind.

While we were unanimous in declaring that perky high-schooler Alaina would go down hard in the face of a split vote with McCreery, we obviously fumbled on that one and are still licking our wounds this morning.

" Despite the online buzz, despite 'peaking at the right time,' despite wiping the floor with Lauren and Scotty with her Led Zeppelin ditty, at the end of the day, Haley Reinhart's likability factor did her in," said MTV News "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello. "For whatever reason, the girl was pegged as an attitude-having, flippant, ungrateful brat. It was an image that she just couldn't shake. I never understood why people felt that way, but her detractors were just as loud as her supporters."

Cantiello is confused as to why producers want a finale where both contestants are in the same genre and age range, a first in "Idol" history. But he thinks that's what executive producer Nigel Lythgoe wanted all along, so there you have it.

"Idol" blogger MJ Santilli also didn't see this one coming, confident that vote-splitting would ward off an all-country finale hoedown. "I don't know what to say except, there must be a hell of a lot of country fans who were voting like mad this week," she said. "Sure you can split hairs ? Lauren sings pop/country where Scotty leans to more traditional fare, but I would venture that their styles overlap more than any other final duo in 'Idol' history. That's going to make for a rather lackluster finale, in my opinion."

Though Reinhart's barely disguised disgust at being eliminated and Alaina's furtive attempt to lean in for the obligatory "so sorry" hug made for a classic screen grab moment, Santilli lamented what could have been but will never be. "Haley's blowsy rock growl and Scotty's country twang would have made for some, uhm, interesting duets," she said. "Still, variety in the final would have been nice. The season started off with a top 13 that was full of diversity. But now, we're looking at possibly the most monochromatic and boring 'Idol' final two ever. Can you say vanilla?"

After 11 weeks of forecasting the season, here are the current (dismal) standings:

Gil Kaufman: 5-for-12
?Jim Cantiello: 5-for-12
?MJ Santilli: 5-for-12
?Maura Johnston: 2-for-12???
