European Ladies Football Championship ? Round 1

Travelling with a squad of seven, including four players born outside Ireland of which three were under the age of 18, the Luxembourg Ladies Gaelic football team recently travelled to Maastricht to take part in the first round of the 2013 European Football Championship.

First up for Luxembourg was Holland ladies. In a closely fought match with the ball flowing end to end, goalkeeper Maura Clifford made some fantastic saves, and some great defending from Catherine Schaus and 17-year-old midfielder Annie Walsh led by example with tireless running and points taking. However, Holland ladies using their vast experience ran out winners.

Next up for Luxembourg was Paris Gaels. In another close match, Luxembourg fought from the start with defending from the full forward line. However, despite an excellent point from Heidi Pylkas and a fantastic goal from Sarah Coffey, which was hit from 35 yards out and a contender for goal of the tournament, Paris Gaels saw off the spirited challenge from Luxembourg to win the game.

In the last game of the day, Luxembourg played the eventual winners of the tournament Belgium. Belgium came off the better despite some great harrying from Jess Cafferkey and some good opportunities created by trainer Claire Walsh.

With the return of players after holidays and injury, The Luxembourg ladies team will now look forward to the second round of The European Ladies Football Championship in Paris in mid-September.
