Passive or Active for lower budget system? - DIYMA Car Audio Forum

Hello,

I found this site while researching, I thought I would post a question.

I have a relatively low level of car audio experience. In the past, I have installed component systems with a sub, amps and a head unit. I have used the high pass on the amps for the 2 way passive components and the lowpass for the sub woofer.

I am going to replace the factory system on my 2001 Audi TT roadster.

My original plan was: ~ $280 for head unit and speakers
Low cost head unit `$120, component speakers ~$160 ( Focal Access 165 A1, Ctx65cs - Image Dynamics 6.5", or something similar) and re-use old amplifiers that I have (~ 4 x 50, ~4 x 40, ~ 2 x 30, all will be bridged for extra power, just using 3 channels) and an old sub in the trunk (or possibly powering the existing 8" factory one.

Potential new plan:~$470 for head unit and speakers
After reading a bit here I am considering getting passive drivers and a more expensive head unit with bandpass capabilities.
Pioneer DEH-80PRS ~$270 or Clarion CZ702 ~$170
Dayton RS180's mid bass drivers $49 each $98 total
Dayton Audio RS28A-4 ~ $55 each, $110 total...or other suggested tweeters
re-use amps and sub.

Do you think the 2nd system will be significantly better sounding?
Will it be difficult for me to tune the second system with the Pioneer 'auto tune' feature?
With a roadster does it really matter?

thank in advance...

Ryan
