College baseball roundup: USC splits with Liberty

South Carolina's baseball team split a doubleheader against Liberty on Sunday at Carolina Stadium.

The Gamecocks (2-1) won the opener 8-7, while the Flames took the nightcap, 3-2.

In the first game, USC stormed back from seven runs down in the final two innings. Max Schrock drove in two runs, while Graham Saiko and Tanner English each scored twice.

South Carolina left-hander Adam Westmoreland earned the win after 2 1/3 innings of relief.

In the second game, Liberty (1-2) scored twice in the top of the fourth inning and held off the Gamecocks. Saiko and Joey Pankake each had two hits.

USC starter Nolan Belcher suffered the loss, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

USC is off until Friday when it begins a three-game home set against Albany.

Clemson 12, William & Mary 2: Clemson (2-1) scored 12 runs on 14 hits in its last three innings at the plate to defeat William & Mary at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Thomas Brittle, Steve Wilkerson, and Garrett Boulware led Clemson's 15-hit attack with two hits apiece. Wilkerson added a double and a career-high four RBIs, while Boulware went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Scott Firth (1-0) earned the win in his first start since 2011. In a career-long seven innings pitched, he allowed just two hits, one run, and one walk with five strikeouts.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, beginning a three-game series against Wright State at home.

Wofford postponed: Because of Saturday's snow, the Terriers' game against UNC Asheville was postponed on Sunday. A make-up date has not been set. Wofford will host Niagara at 1:30 p.m. Monday to make up Saturday's postponed game.

Upstate schedule altered: USC Upstate's game against Georgetown on Sunday was canceled in the wake of Saturday's winter weather. The Spartans will host Kentucky at 1 p.m. Monday at Harley Park to make up Saturday's postponed game.
