See Mars in a Billion Pixels

You might have seen gigapixel images?those stunning billion-pixel pictures that allow the viewer to zoom and enhance anywhere, CSI-style, creating incredibly in-depth views of cities, landscapes, and more. But you've may not have seen an extraterrestrial one until now.

NASA today released a 1.3-billion-pixel panoramic image of Mars (a tiny portion of which you see here), made by weaving together more than 850 frames that the Curiosity rover shot last fall. These raw images have been freely available, and NASA says Curiosity fans around the world have made at least one martian gigapixel image themselves. However, the agency's official creation reveals a full 360-degree view of Curiosity's position at a location called Rocknest. You can see Mount Sharp, the rover's eventual destination, in the distance, or zoom in on small rocks in the foreground.
