Boston College Baseball Splits Midweek Series With USF, Stumbles Into ACC Play

Birdball is just 3-8 on the year, the worst mark in the ACC.

Heading into Birdball's midweek series with the South Florida Bulls, Boston College had compiled a record of just 2-7, the worst mark -- by a significant margin -- in the ACC. They come out of the series with a midweek split and head into ACC play this weekend at just 3-8.

On Tuesday, the Eagles bats finally came alive, tallying a season-high 10 runs and 16 hits en route to a 10-4 victory over USF. John Hennessy, Gabriel Hernandez and Stephen Sauter led the team at the plate with 3-for-5 performances. Hennessy and Hernandez each tallied three RBIs while Hennessy recorded two triples. Chris Shaw homered in the third. Sophomore RHP Eric Stone (1-0) picked up the W, going just three innings on a pitch count and allowing seven hits and two runs.

Last night, the Bulls returned the favor, scoring nine runs to top the Eagles 9-4. The Eagles managed just five hits on the night but capitalized on three USF errors for scores. Freshman Austin Solecitto shouldered the loss in his first career start, pitching just one inning and allowing six runs on three hits and four walks. Solecitto struck out one.

So at 3-8 on the year and heading into ACC play this weekend against No. 5 Florida State, where do the Eagles stand in the ACC standings? Basically, not good.

Boston College is currently dead last in the ACC with an overall record currently five games under .500 heading into conference play. Here are the conference standings as of Wednesday night:

ACC newcomers Louisville (9-2-0) and Notre Dame (8-2-0) run 1-2 in the latest Big East standings, while Pitt (5-4-0) is tied for fourth with Georgetown. While I certainly didn't expect BC to be undefeated going into conference play, I also didn't expect Birdball to be the only .500 club in the expanded conference. By a pretty significant margin too.

I get that this team is young playing with several significant freshmen contributors, but this isn't where I had hoped the program would be 11 games into the year. This is Gambino's worst start to the season heading into conference play since he took over in July 2010. The program started the season 6-5 heading into the conference opener the last two seasons.

It certainly doesn't bode well that they have started the season so poorly for fan support later in the year when the team finally makes it back to campus later this month. Combine little to no fan support with a lack of ACC caliber facilities and a deflated indoor practice facility and it just feels like this season is over before it starts.

Hopefully Birdball can show some signs of life this weekend against No. 5 Florida State down in Tallahassee. Sunday's 1 p.m. game will be broadcast on ESPN 3.
