Johnson City's youth soccer league about much more than winning ...

Calling Johnson City?s recreation soccer program a success is a bit of an understatement. What started as 75 children playing in the outfield of Cardinal Park in the late 1970s has grown into Saturday mornings of organized chaos at Civitan Park.

With 1,500 participants ages 3 to 15, it?s possibly the biggest league around. ?To our estimations, as far as true recreation programs, we are the largest in the state of Tennessee,? Johnson City Athletic Coordinator David Carmichel said in comparison to similar soccer leagues in Germantown with about 700 players and Maryville with 550.

Numbers have remained steady since the program exploded in the 1990s. This season boasts 113 teams that play four days a week on fields at Winged Deer and Civitan parks. There are 15 officials who monitor the various games and about five city workers who mow and stripe the fields.
