Anti-tax pledge author meets with House GOP

(AP) ? The author of an anti-tax increase pledge signed by nearly every Republican in Congress says he's not hurting the GOP's election chances this fall.

Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist is frequently vilified by Democrats as the reason it's been so hard for Washington to reach a bipartisan deficit-cutting deal.

Norquist met privately Thursday with a small group of House Republicans and dozens of GOP aides.

The meeting came at a time when some Republicans in Congress and elsewhere have been distancing themselves from Norquist's pledge. It also comes as the two parties battle over whether to extend expiring tax cuts for the rich at the end of this year, and whether to overhaul the entire tax code.
