Eagles excuse Cooper from team after racial slur

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The Philadelphia Eagles excused Riley Cooper from all team activities on Friday as the wide receiver deals with repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur.

Cooper has been sent away from the team to get help with his issues, something the player and the team agreed upon. Coach Chip Kelly made it clear after Friday's practice, however, that Cooper would be back with the team when he's ready.

"There has never been any question of cutting Riley," Kelly said. "His status with us is not in question."

Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult and he will step away to seek counseling.

"My actions were inexcusable," he said. "The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better."

Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him.

"Right now, I think it's important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation," Cooper said. "The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what I've done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time."

The Eagles did not set a timetable for Cooper's return. The team is off Saturday. They will return Sunday and then will host the New England Patriots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before playing the Patriots, Friday night in the preseason opener.

"He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates," the team said in a statement.

Cooper spoke to the media again after practice Thursday, telling them his meeting with teammates a night earlier was "extremely emotional." Teammates Michael Vick, Jason Avant and others expressed forgiveness for Cooper. LeSean McCoy also said he forgives Cooper, but "I can't really respect somebody like that."

Cooper, who grew up in Clearwater, Fla., was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Eagles out of the University of Florida. He has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but has been practicing with the starters since Jeremy Maclin's season-ending knee injury last week.

"As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I'm going to try to make this right," Cooper said.

Players on the team continue to be asked about Cooper's situation, making it a distraction or as wide receiver DeSean Jackson called it, "a burden." Cornerback Cary Williams, a free agent addition to the Eagles this past offseason, tried to put it all in the perspective.

"This is about history," Williams said. "Some of us have had ancestors killed over that word. There is a lot of history behind it. That history needs to be addressed. I remember my grandmother telling me stories how she was called the n-word, while being bitten by dogs and hosed.

"Why did Riley say this? That's a question that needs to be asked. I still think it is the elephant in the room."

Williams also said it doesn't matter who you are or what color you are the word should never be used.

"Nobody should say it," he said. "I don't care if you white, black, blue, green or purple. The hip-hop culture uses the word and has de-emphasized it. You need to go back and see what our ancestors did to try and rid themselves of that word."

The Eagles do not plan to rid themselves of Cooper permanently. When he comes back, how will he be treated is the next question.

"He's our teammate. He hasn't been released from our team, so whatever he has to handle, he has to handle," Jackson said. "As far as the rest of the team, we have to focus on what we want to accomplish this season and not let this be a burden."

Vick, who has shown support for Cooper from the beginning, was asked what advice he would have for his teammate.

"Let this situation make me a better person," the quarterback said. "This is a good thing for Coop to get away for a while and reflect. We've already put the plan in place to help him come back full form and become one of the guys again."

Exhibit recalls Bob Hope, who made troops laugh

NEW ORLEANS?Bob Hope entertained 11 presidents at the White House, hosted the Academy Awards 19 times and told thousands of jokes to some 10 million U.S. troops over the course of four wars.

Now the long life and legacy of the beloved actor and comedian, who died 10 years ago at age 100, is being celebrated at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, where the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum has brought the "Bob Hope: An American Treasure" traveling exhibition.

More than 160 mementos from Hope's life capture his passion for golf, relationships with presidents, pride in his country and appreciation for military service. The exhibit officially opens to the public Saturday, though a soft opening will be held Friday during regular museum hours.

The exhibit includes vintage photographs of Hope entertaining troops at USO shows overseas, an honorary Oscar statuette and PGA of America money clip. But the highlight is Hope's jokes, which are printed on displays and included in video clips throughout the exhibit.

"It was important to make it funny," said Jack Peter, senior vice president of the World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, who was in New Orleans for the opening. "That was one of the requests of the family."

And funny it is.

"I left England when I found out I couldn't be king" is the Hope quote in the section of the exhibit about his immigration to America from England as a young boy.

"He was very proud to be an American immigrant, that he was able to come here and succeed, and he wanted to give something back," said Anthony "Tony" Montalto, Hope's longtime accountant, who over the decades became a good friend and remains a trustee of Hope's estate.

There are pictures and jokes of Hope's time spent playing golf with presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and others.

"He's played golf with more presidents than just about anybody," Peter said.

The exhibit also includes a plaque of Hope's induction into the U.S. Blind Golf Association Hall of Fame and his name tag proclaiming him an "active member."

"When I miss a shot, I just think what a beautiful day it is ... then I take a deep breath. I have to do that. That's what gives me the strength to break the club," Hope is quoted as saying.

Jokes aside, the exhibit also captures Hope's appreciation for military service. There are pictures of him shaking hands with injured troops, some who had lost limbs but had smiles on their faces. There are pictures and video of Hope entertaining on stage during World War II, Vietnam and other wars.

"This brings another aspect of the war that we're not always able to tell through our permanent exhibits," said Toni Kiser, the National WWII Museum's curator who put the exhibit together. "It was really important to the troops to get rest and relaxation, and not only did they love to be entertained with music and comedy, it was necessary for them to have that down time, to not be in fight mode the entire time."

Hope, it seemed, knew that.

"I have seen what a laugh can do," he is quoted as saying, in the exhibit space with pictures of him with wounded troops. "It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful."

The exhibit will remain on display in New Orleans through Oct. 31.

Oil has biggest gain in 3 weeks on Fed, US economy

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil rose the most in three weeks amid signs that the U.S. economy is improving, but not fast enough for the Federal Reserve to reduce its monthly bond-buying program.

Still, many analysts don't expect a further spike in oil prices like the one seen earlier in July.

Benchmark oil gained $1.95, or 1.9 percent, to close at $105.03 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's the biggest one-day gain since oil rose $2.99 on July 10.

Traders were encouraged by two economic reports. The government said the economy grew at a better-than-expected annual rate of 1.7 percent in the second quarter. And a survey from payroll company ADP showed U.S. businesses created a healthy 200,000 jobs this month. The reports signal the possibility of improved demand for gasoline and other refined products such as diesel fuel.

Gasoline futures rose 3 cents to finish at $3.04 per gallon.

In the afternoon, the Federal Reserve slightly downgraded its assessment of economic growth from "moderate" to "modest." That's an indication the Fed might need to maintain its $85 billion a month in bond purchases, which have helped keep long-term borrowing rates ultra-low and boosted purchases of riskier investments such as stocks and oil futures.

The Fed statement boosted the price of oil above $105. Oil finished the month of July with a gain of $8.47 a barrel, or 8.8 percent. That helped increase the cost of driving. Average gasoline prices rose 14 cents this month, to $3.63 a gallon Wednesday from $3.49 on July 1. AAA said it was the biggest monthly increase since February.

At an average of $3.59 per gallon, drivers paid the third highest gas prices on record from Memorial Day through July 31, AAA said in a report Wednesday. The high for the period was $4.04 per gallon in 2008. Gas averaged $3.67 per gallon in 2011 through July.

The latest supply data from the Energy Department was mixed. Oil supplies rose by 400,000 barrels last week ? the first increase in five weeks ? although supplies at the crucial Cushing, Okla., hub for benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude declined by 1.9 million barrels.

Despite Wednesday's jump in price, analysts don't see oil rallying much further.

Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates, expects oil to trade in a range of $103 to $106 a barrel in the near term before declining.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch issued a report that said rising production in the U.S. and slowing growth in emerging markets should constrain oil prices. The research firm said that "unless a deteriorating geopolitical outlook in the Middle East results in further crude oil supply disruptions, the rally in WTI prices is unlikely to persist."

The market has another key economic report to look forward to. On Friday the release of employment data for July will be examined for hints about future energy demand in the world's No. 1 economy.

Brent crude, traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, rose 79 cents to end at $107.70 per barrel.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Heating oil rose 4 cents to finish at $3.04 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 1 cent to end at $3.45 per 1,000 cubic feet.
