Pulitzer Prize-winner Anthony Lewis dies at 85

BOSTON (AP) ? Two-time Pulitzer winner Anthony Lewis, whose New York Times column championed liberal causes for three decades, died Monday. He was 85.

Lewis worked for 32 years as a columnist for the Times, taking up such causes as free speech, human rights and constitutional law. He won his first Pulitzer in 1955 as a reporter defending a Navy civilian falsely accused of being a communist sympathizer, and he won again in 1963 for reporting on the Supreme Court.

His acclaimed 1964 book, "Gideon's Trumpet," told the story of a petty thief whose fight for legal representation led to a landmark Supreme Court decision.

His wife, Margaret Marshall, the former chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, confirmed his death from complications from heart and renal failure.

Lewis saw himself as a defender of decency, respect for law and reason against a tide of religious fundamentalism and extreme nationalism. His columns railed against the Vietnam War, Watergate, apartheid in South Africa and Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza.

He wrote his final "Abroad at Home" column for The Times on Dec. 15, 2001, warning against the U.S. fearfully surrendering its civil liberties in the wake of the terrorist attacks three months earlier.

"The hard question is whether our commitment to law will survive the new sense of vulnerability that is with us all after Sept. 11," he wrote. "It is easy to tolerate dissent when we feel safe."

Gail Collins, then the editorial page editor of the Times, said when Lewis resigned that he had been an inspiration.

"His fearlessness, the clarity of his writing and his commitment to human rights and civil liberties are legendary," Collins said. "And he's also one of the kindest people I have ever known."

"Gideon's Trumpet" became a legal classic, telling the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, whose case resulted in the creation of the public defender systems across the nation. In Gideon v. Wainwright, the high court ruled that criminal defendants are entitled to a lawyer even if they cannot afford one.

Gideon's victory, Lewis wrote, "shows that even the poorest and least powerful of men ? a convict with not even a friend to visit him in prison ? can take his cause to the highest court in the land and bring about a fundamental change in the law."

The best-selling book was later made into a television movie starring Henry Fonda.

"Generation after generation of students, the way they learned about the Supreme Court, was by reading 'Gideon's Trumpet,'" said Ronald K. L. Collins, a scholar at the University of Washington School of Law who put together a bibliography of Lewis' expansive writings on free speech.

Lewis was known for his skill at interpreting and writing clearly about the decisions of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Earl Warren in the 1950s and '60s.

"One cannot talk about the Warren court without talking about Anthony Lewis," Collins said. "He was almost the 10th justice of the Warren court. He was careful in his journalism, but his ethos was clearly the same as the Warren court."

Fighting for the underdog was a theme for Lewis. He won his first Pulitzer Prize at the age of 28 for a series of articles in the Washington Daily News that were judged responsible for clearing a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy from McCarthy-era allegations that he was a security risk.

Lewis said Abraham Chasanow was a middle-class man, uninterested in politics, who was terrorized by the federal loyalty-security program of the 1950s when unnamed informants alleged Chasanow was a radical communist sympathizer. The Navy ultimately apologized to Chasanow.

A consistent advocate of free speech, Lewis titled his 2008 book "Freedom for the Thought That We Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment." It detailed how laws beginning with the 1798 Sedition Act, which made it a crime to criticize government officials, have abridged freedom of expression.

"We need to celebrate and understand our unique freedom, and it is unique in this country this freedom of speech and press," Lewis told the Times in 2007. "And I don't actually think we understand it well."

Freedom of expression was also a topic for Lewis in his 1991 book, "Make No Law: The Sullivan Case and the First Amendment," about a 1964 U.S. Supreme Court decision that protected news organizations from some libel suits.

Joseph Anthony Lewis was born in New York City on March 27, 1927, the son of a nursery school director and a textile company director. He attended the elite Horace Mann School in the Bronx and graduated from Harvard College in 1948.

He joined the Times in 1948 and spent most of his career there, except a stint at the now-defunct Washington Daily News, where he worked from 1952 to 1955.

He studied law for a year at Harvard in the 1950s so he could go on to cover the Supreme Court for the Times, and served as chief of the newspaper's London bureau from 1965 to 1972. He began his twice-weekly "Abroad at Home" column from London in 1969 and moved to Boston in 1972.

In 1984, he married Marshall, who in 1996 was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. She was made chief justice in 1999 and wrote the court's 2003 decision legalizing same-sex marriage. When she announced her retirement in 2010, Marshall said Lewis had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and she was leaving "so that Tony and I may enjoy our final seasons together."

Marshall said Lewis was a humble man who loved vegetable gardening, opera and musicals, and wrote on a manual typewriter until the day he died.

"He loved people," she said. "He was enthusiastic about so much. Most of all, he loved the rule of law. He was really passionate about that. He had a very high regard for judges and the judicial system. He really thought that was the core value that made the United States so different."

When Lewis retired, he told the Times that his career as a columnist had led him to two conclusions.

"One is that certainty is the enemy of decency and humanity in people who are sure they are right, like Osama bin Laden and (then-Attorney General) John Ashcroft," he said. "And secondly that for this country at least, given the kind of obstreperous, populous, diverse country we are, law is the absolute essential. And when governments short-cut the law, it's extremely dangerous."

He also taught at universities including Harvard, Columbia, California, Illinois, Oregon, Arizona and Stanford.

Regarding ?The Monitor?s View? of Feb. 18, ?Filling hearts, ending gangs?: As a mentor for youth involved in gangs, I agree with the way Chicago is handling the gang and gun problems in its area. The combination of law enforcement and clergy mentorship, praised by the editorial, is a great dynamic to implement in high-risk neighborhoods. That is why I volunteer for a nonprofit, Freedom4Youth, that employs a similar strategy in utilizing local college students, ex-gang members, and former troubled youth, with the combined support of our local probation system.

The reason I enjoy being a youth mentor is because I was a former gang member. I became a father, and I cannot imagine losing my daughter to gang violence because of my gang history. It?s up to ex-gang members like myself to dismantle the gangs we created. I cannot just change my life and ignore the fact that others may join gangs and cause an endless cycle of pain and destruction. I do not want to have any more families and youth going through this unnecessary violence.

I believe in what President Obama says: ?It is up to us, as parents and as neighbors and as teachers and as mentors, to make sure our young people don?t have that void inside them. It?s up to us to spend more time with them, to pay more attention to them, to show them more love so that they learn to love themselves, so that they learn to love one another, so that they grow up knowing what it is to walk a mile in somebody else?s shoes and to view the world through somebody else?s eyes.?

I will be the first in my family to graduate from college. I am graduating from California State University, Northridge, in May 2013 and then moving on to pursue my MBA. I did this with little guidance since there were no outreach programs or help. I want to help prevent senseless acts of violence and needless deaths like that of Hadiya Pendleton, an innocent bystander who was killed in a gang-related shooting in February 2013 in Chicago.

As the editorial points out, the collaboration efforts and mentorship strategy of involving police and religion are effective. Connecting ?troubled? youth with the beauty and opportunity surrounding them in their community benefits the individual and the community as a whole.

Organism may cause people to reap more calories from their food, contributing to weight gain

LOS ANGELES (EMBARGOED UNTIL 12 A.M. EST ON MARCH 26, 2013) How much a person eats may be only one of many factors that determines weight gain. A recent Cedars-Sinai study suggests that a breath test profile of microorganisms inhabiting the gut may be able to tell doctors how susceptible a person is to developing obesity.

The study, published online Thursday by The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, shows that people whose breath has high concentrations of both hydrogen and methane gasses are more likely to have a higher body mass index and higher percentage of body fat.

"This is the first large-scale human study to show an association between gas production and body weight and this could prove to be another important factor in understanding one of the many causes of obesity", said lead author Ruchi Mathur, MD, director of the Diabetes Outpatient Treatment and Education Center in the Division of Endocrinology at Cedars-Sinai.

The study, which will also appear in JCEM's April 2013 issue, analyzed the breath content of 792 people. Based on the breath tests, four patterns emerged. The subjects either had normal breath content, higher concentrations of methane, higher levels of hydrogen, or higher levels of both gases. Those who tested positive for high concentrations of both gases had significantly higher body mass indexes and higher percentages of body fat.

The presence of methane is associated with a microorganism called Methanobrevibacter smithii. This organism is responsible for the majority of methane production in the human host.

"Usually, the microorganisms living in the digestive tract benefit us by helping convert food into energy. However, when this particular organism M. smithii becomes overabundant, it may alter this balance in a way that causes someone to be more likely to gain weight," Mathur said.

These organisms scavenge hydrogen from other microbes and use it to produce methane which is eventually exhaled by the host. Researchers theorize this interaction helps neighboring hydrogen-producing bacteria thrive and extract nutrients from food more efficiently. Over time, this may contribute to weight gain.

"Essentially, it could allow a person to harvest more calories from their food," Mathur said.

In an ongoing study funded by the American Diabetes Association, Mathur is working to confirm the link between M. smithii, obesity and pre-diabetic conditions by determining how efficiently people digest food before and after eliminating the microorganism with a targeted dose of antibiotic. Participants who have evidence of methane on their breath are given a standard diet over three days, undergo an oral glucose challenge, and swallow a "smart pill" to track how fast the food moves through their bodies. In addition, their stool is collected and sent for calorie analysis allowing researchers to determine how many calories are being harvested during digestion. Participants then repeat the same tests after taking the antibiotic regimen to see if elimination of the organism results in measureable changes.

"This should let us know just how energy balance is affected by M. smthii," Mathur said, "We're only beginning to understand the incredibly complex communities that live inside of us. If we can understand how they affect our metabolism, we may be able to work with these microscopic communities to positively impact our health."

An Arbitrary Number of Years Since Mathematician Paul Erd s Birth

Today would?ve been the 100th anniversary of the Hungary-born mathematician who worked published so many papers and so many with a high impact that a playful measure of one?s academic affiliation with him has been created

I take issue with the celebration of Paul Erd?s? 100th birthday.

Not the celebration itself, but the number. Why 100? The number 100 was chosen, of course, because 10 is the base unit of our number system: we have 10 unique symbols (0-9) which can be combined to represent any conceivable number. Ten units of 10 is 100, so it?s a nice, neat factor. If we used a base-12 system we would have 12 unique symbols, and we?d be celebrating anniversaries of 144 years. But I can?t find any particular significance about 100 for Erd?s.

Paul Erd?s was born in 1913 in Hungary to Jewish parents, both mathematics teachers. He moved to Manchester in 1934 for a post-doctoral appointment, but also spent time (unofficially) working in London, Cambridge and Bristol: a trend of bouncing from institute to institute that would continue for the rest of his life. Erd?s did not return to Hungary until 1945, when Soviet troops liberated Budapest. Throughout his life he spent time living in the US, Israel and Britain, and visited Hungary often. But he had no permanent residence. He lectured, taught and worked at dozens of universities, but never held a permanent position at any of them. He died in 1996 of a heart attack while attending a conference in Warsaw.?

Next year will mark Erd?s? 101st birthday, which would be better than celebrating his 100th birthday because 101 is a prime number. You can?t divide 101 by anything but 1 and itself and still get a whole number (where 100 is the product of 2 x 2 x 5 x 5). Erd?s once told his biographer Paul Hoffman, in a somewhat beautiful and somewhat sad sentiment, that prime numbers were his best friends.

A large portion of Erd?s?s work involved prime numbers. The first significant theorem he ever proved, at age 17, stated that between any number and its double, there is at least one prime number. The Russian mathematical giant Chebyshev had already proven this theorem, called Bertrand?s conjecture, 80 years earlier, but Erd?s proof was simpler and clearer. Erd?s later did a similar job of simplifying the prime number theorem, which reveals how prime numbers will be distributed. Close to zero, prime numbers are common: 2,3,5,7, etc. As one climbs higher and higher, prime numbers occur more infrequently. (The prime number theorem doesn?t? show how to find those numbers, which are infinitely abundant. The largest known prime number is 257,885,161 ? 1, which has over 17.4 million digits).

Reducing proofs and theorems to their ?elementary? state was a particular talent of Erd?s?. He once wrote a simpler proof of a theorem in a paper he was supposed to be refereeing. Erd?s believed that ?the Supreme Fascist? (God) kept a book of mathematical proofs in their most perfect, simplified states, and it was the task of mathematicians to transcribe the pages from this book.

In some respects, zero was a rather significant number for Erd?s. He never married, never had children, never bought a home, never had a regular job or very much money, and never stayed in one location for very long. Instead he traveled, carrying all his worldly possessions in two suitcases, making a temporary home with collaborators. This style of living took him all over the U.S. and Europe. At last count, he published papers with 511 people.

Erd?s? terrible behavior as a house guest is a thing of legend: opening a carton of tomato juice by cutting a hole in it and not bothering to clean up the mess; banging pots and pans at 4:30 in the morning to wake everyone so they could continue their work.

Despite his obnoxious behavior, Erd?s was usually welcomed back, and remained friends with most of the people he visited. Reportedly, he was a radiantly happy person, a delightful collaborator, and had a gift for getting people to do the best mathematics they were capable of.? In fact, a more fitting day of celebration for Erd?s might be December 26, 2039, or 1,521 months after his birth; 1,521 is the total number of papers Erd?s collaborated on, which is more than any other mathematician in history.
