Isner, 2-time champ del Potro in Washington final

A couple of plastic sandwich bags filled with ice were resting on his left thigh, and some others were chilling his right knee, as an admittedly exhausted John Isner assessed how he's holding up after eight victories in 10 days.

"My body doesn't feel great," Isner said, then paused and smiled. "At the same time, nothing is wrong with me, besides just being a little tired and a little worn out. But that's what happens when you play well."

The highest-ranked American man certainly has been doing that lately. Isner, who is ranked 20th and seeded eighth, set up his sternest test of late, earning a matchup against top-seeded and two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's Citi Open final.

Taking control by breaking serve immediately after a rain delay, Isner hit 29 aces and beat unseeded Dmitry Tursunov 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-4.

Later, del Potro came out much stronger after his semifinal was interrupted for more than three hours by showers and he turned things around to beat third-seeded Tommy Haas 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a match that ended past midnight.

"The rain, for sure, helped me to come back in this match," said the seventh-ranked del Potro, who hasn't dropped a set in three previous victories against Isner.

Del Potro stretched his winning streak at the hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open to 13 matches. He won Washington's tournament in 2008 and 2009, then skipped it the past three years.

Trailing Haas 4-1 when a downpour came, 2009 U.S. Open champion del Potro won four games in a row.

"The rain delay's annoying. It bothers me a lot, actually," said Haas, who showed frustration at various moments by spiking, tossing or kicking his racket.

"Come back out there, and the momentum was really on my side, at least for the first set, I think. (If) it would have been mine, it would have been maybe a different match. But these are all the `ifs' and `buts' and not worth talking about."

Still, Haas actually held two set points late in the first, one of which del Potro erased with a 117 mph second-serve ace, and the other with a volley winner.

"He went for it," said Haas, a finalist last year. "He deserved it."

Because of all the delays, unseeded Andrea Petkovic's 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 4 Alize Cornet in the second women's semifinal did not start until after 12:30 a.m. Sunday _ and did not finish until after 2:10 a.m.

Petkovic, seeking her first title since 2011, was scheduled to return to the court about 15 hours later to meet defending champion Magdalena Rybarikova in Sunday's final. Rybarikova beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-0 in a semifinal stopped by rain at 5-2 in the first set.

Much, much earlier, Isner finished with a flourish _ his last six serves were aces _ and continued the strong form he showed last week while winning the title at Atlanta on a hard court.

"When you're winning, you're playing a lot of matches, and from that, naturally, you're just going to wear down," said Isner, who was visited by a trainer in the third set but said the left leg injury that forced him to stop playing at Wimbledon in June was not bothering him.

"I just wanted to get it massaged a little bit," said Isner, who for years has been officially listed as being 6-foot-9 by the ATP, but the tour's website recently changed that to 6-10. "It wasn't anything I was seriously worried about."

Isner, the 2007 runner-up in Washington, acknowledged his body feels "like it's a little beat up" after a second consecutive three-setter and a busy 1 1/2 weeks, "but I'll be ready to go tomorrow, for sure."

After dropping the first set against Tursunov, Isner was ahead on serve 2-1 in the second when, with the match 70 minutes old and a drizzle falling, play was suspended. When they resumed at 30-40, Isner converted the break point with a forehand passing winner on a 12-stroke exchange.

"It's definitely not a comfortable feeling" to return from a delay facing break point, Tursunov said. "Really, you understand that if you don't win this point, you're down a break, and then the set is over."

Indeed, that was the first break in the match, and all Isner would need to even things at a set apiece 15 minutes later.

"Gave me all sorts of momentum," Isner said.

He broke again to lead 3-2 in the third, this time at love, helped by three unforced errors by the 61st-ranked Tursunov.

That was pretty much that, because Isner's powerful serve was clicking _ just as it usually does during the summer hard-court season in North America.

"It's my absolute favorite time of the year," said Isner, whose best Grand Slam showing was a run to the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2011. "It's not a coincidence that I play and do well here in the summer, every single year."

Isner won 69 of 86 points he served Saturday, including runs of 16 and 14 in a row, and did not face a break point.

"You really can't see the serve too well. ... It's really just a lot of guessing," Tursunov said.

Said del Potro, looking ahead to facing Isner: "Nobody can break his serve in this tournament. ... Of course, sometimes you get frustrated when you can't return his serve."

If Isner wins Sunday, he would earn his third title of 2013 and pull even with No. 1 Novak Djokovic for the third-highest total on tour. Only Rafael Nadal (seven) and Andy Murray (four) have won more.

As for whether a ninth match in 11 days might force him to reconsider his schedule over the coming weeks _ the year's last major tournament starts in New York on Aug. 26 _ Isner said he hasn't thought about that yet.

"I want to be as fresh as I can for the U.S. Open," the 245-pound Isner said. "I have played a lot of matches (and) I'm not necessarily built to play week after week after week."

Set Up a Family Loan Pool to Pay For College

Set Up a Family Loan Pool to Pay For College

Paying for college is only getting more expensive and interest rates on government-subsidized student loans have gone up. One alternative to save money is to start a family loan pool.

As Reuters points out, some families have taken to creating a pool of money that extended family members can pull from for college education at a reduced rate. The advantage being that students can get a lower interest rate than they might otherwise pay with a private or government loan. Reuters explains how they work:

Family loan pools are similar to family banks, which typically take the form of a trust or limited liability company. But family loan pools are more narrow in scope, since family banks can sometimes take equity stakes in ventures and make grants as well as loans.

Under a loan pool, a family sets up a trust and bequests an initial sum into it. They then establish rules for how family members qualify for the loans, how long they have to pay them back and what happens if they default.

Of course, family loan pools bring certain complications. For starters, it would require a fairly large extended family. If you don't talk to them much, it may not be possible to set one up. It can also introduce new tensions in a family if members can't separate personal and financial issues. Still, if your family can pull it off, you could save a lot of money.

Sun Valley church usher charged with sexually abusing four boys

Related: More church abuse scandal files released by 5 Catholic religious orders

Prosecutors have charged an usher at a Jehovah's Witness church in Sun Valley with several sex abuse counts for allegedly assaulting four boys between the ages of 8 and 15 that he met through the church, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Marcelo Alonso Lozano, 34, who lives in the Sun Valley area, was charged with nine felony counts, including two counts each of aggravated sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual abuse and oral copulation of a person under 14. He also faces one count each of a forcible lewd act upon a child, lewd act upon a child and sodomy of a person under 14 with 10 years difference, officials said. The criminal complaint includes a special allegation of multiple victims.

Prosecutors identified the church as the Jehovah's Witness, Sun Valley Spanish Congregation, though police identified it as the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Sun Valley. The church is on the 12000 block of Wicks Street. The abuse allegedly took place between Jan. 1, 2006 and June 30, 2013.

Lozano pleaded not guilty to all counts during an arraignment Wednesday, according to Uchin Jang, a judicial assistant for Van Nuys courthouse Dept. 100.

"The suspect used his position of trust to lure these victims back to his residence,

where these incidents would occur," said Los Angeles Police Department Detective John Perez of the North Hollywood Division.

Perez said the investigation is ongoing and they are looking for other possible victims that Lozano could have associated with over the years. Elders of the church came forward with information that led to Lozano's arrest, he said.

"We want to make sure there are no other victims out there," Perez said. "Anyone we could help or anyone that's hurting, we want to help them."

The defendant's bail was set Wednesday at $1.8 million, court officials said. If convicted as charged, Lozano faces a maximum term of life in state prison.

Lozano is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 12 at 8:30 a.m. to set a preliminary hearing date.

Eagles excuse Cooper from team after racial slur

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The Philadelphia Eagles excused Riley Cooper from all team activities on Friday as the wide receiver deals with repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur.

Cooper has been sent away from the team to get help with his issues, something the player and the team agreed upon. Coach Chip Kelly made it clear after Friday's practice, however, that Cooper would be back with the team when he's ready.

"There has never been any question of cutting Riley," Kelly said. "His status with us is not in question."

Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult and he will step away to seek counseling.

"My actions were inexcusable," he said. "The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better."

Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him.

"Right now, I think it's important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation," Cooper said. "The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what I've done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time."

The Eagles did not set a timetable for Cooper's return. The team is off Saturday. They will return Sunday and then will host the New England Patriots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before playing the Patriots, Friday night in the preseason opener.

"He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates," the team said in a statement.

Cooper spoke to the media again after practice Thursday, telling them his meeting with teammates a night earlier was "extremely emotional." Teammates Michael Vick, Jason Avant and others expressed forgiveness for Cooper. LeSean McCoy also said he forgives Cooper, but "I can't really respect somebody like that."

Cooper, who grew up in Clearwater, Fla., was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Eagles out of the University of Florida. He has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but has been practicing with the starters since Jeremy Maclin's season-ending knee injury last week.

"As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I'm going to try to make this right," Cooper said.

Players on the team continue to be asked about Cooper's situation, making it a distraction or as wide receiver DeSean Jackson called it, "a burden." Cornerback Cary Williams, a free agent addition to the Eagles this past offseason, tried to put it all in the perspective.

"This is about history," Williams said. "Some of us have had ancestors killed over that word. There is a lot of history behind it. That history needs to be addressed. I remember my grandmother telling me stories how she was called the n-word, while being bitten by dogs and hosed.

"Why did Riley say this? That's a question that needs to be asked. I still think it is the elephant in the room."

Williams also said it doesn't matter who you are or what color you are the word should never be used.

"Nobody should say it," he said. "I don't care if you white, black, blue, green or purple. The hip-hop culture uses the word and has de-emphasized it. You need to go back and see what our ancestors did to try and rid themselves of that word."

The Eagles do not plan to rid themselves of Cooper permanently. When he comes back, how will he be treated is the next question.

"He's our teammate. He hasn't been released from our team, so whatever he has to handle, he has to handle," Jackson said. "As far as the rest of the team, we have to focus on what we want to accomplish this season and not let this be a burden."

Vick, who has shown support for Cooper from the beginning, was asked what advice he would have for his teammate.

"Let this situation make me a better person," the quarterback said. "This is a good thing for Coop to get away for a while and reflect. We've already put the plan in place to help him come back full form and become one of the guys again."
